I have an '83 f-250 4x4 that's runnning rich. I took the caps off the mixture screws and tried adjusting them. They are both screwed all the way in an it still runs rich, better but rich. Could they be erroded and allowing fuel to pass? If so can I just replace them in attemp to fix the problem? Could something else be causing this such as the float?
It's possible that the mixture screws could be worn. Back them out and take a look at them. Also check the needle and seats for some crud stuck in them. If there is something stuck in them it can cause the carb bowls to flood/vent back into the carb and make the engine run rich.
Just my opinion, but for the time and effort put into it, you might be ahead of the game to just rebuild the carb and be done with it. It really doesn't take too long. That you KNOW what is going on in there.
I agree. Honestly I bought a rebuild kit for it a while back, took it home looked at the diagram and took it back to the store. I'm mechanical minded but I've never had one apart before. I'm sure I can do it, I just need the kick in the butt to get me started.
