Broken hub bolts

I took off my hubs on my 88. They are the stock manual ones. On one side two of the bolt heads were broke off and one on the other. They broke off as I went to turn them. Now I just had my hubs off two days before and I did not even get close to overtightning them. Also, most of them were loose. What could cause this to happen? I am talking about the 6 alan head bolts on each hub.

You didn't put anti sieze on the threads. Always use anti sieze the small tube of the silver kind is the best! Can you grab a hold of them with a pair of vice grips or are they broken at the hub?

Yeah, I did forget the anti-sieze. But the funny part is, the bolt heads were already broke. I did not even have to put turning pressure to snap them. The second I put the alan wrench on the head they just fell off and the rest of the bolt was so loose I just un-did it with my hand after i got the hub off.

If you left them all loose then took it for a ride any movement can cut into the shank and cause a stress crack. That would lead to them snapping! Make sure you torque them to spec so it don't happen again! don't forget the antisieze I use it on every threaded connection, Especially aluminum to steel bolts! It makes life easy down the road if you plan on keeping the truck for any amount of time!

For what its worth. I had a friend that worked in a mine. He told me that they would rebuild scoops (an underground loader) every year. He said the conditions that these machines opperated were terible. He said that they would assemble everything with neversieze and a year later all the bolts would be locked up. He said you couldnd tell that it was ever treated with neversieze. Then they started using sylicone instead and the bolts were easy to remove a year later. He said the sylicone sealed out the moisture. I've never tried it. I dont think it would work with spark plugs, but maybe on hubs and such.

They were probably using the gold antisieze which is junk. I have always used the silver and never had a problem. I have a 1989 yz 250 that i have always used antisieze on all fasteners on the machine and have never had a problem since it was new!
