Post 2000 F150 Front Brake Problem

I have a 2000 F150 Supercab 4x4. I have noticed for some time that braking at slow speeds seemed uneven, but thought I was imagining things. I finally decided it was real and took it to the dealer, with 22k miles. They told me the rotors were warped and I needed to have them turned and new pads put on. They also asked me all kinds of questions about my driving. I have never towed with it, I don't ride the brakes, I drive more on the road than city, I downshift on long descents and I have never had to slam on the brakes to make an emergency stop.

I have never worn out brakes on any vehicle in less than 60k miles and feel this is an obvious defect in this truck. The Service Manager at the dealership does not agree. They say that any problem with parts that normally wear (brakes, clutch, etc) after 12k miles are not covered under warranty.

I have read several posts regarding light-weight rotors on F150. Is this my problem? Am I stuck paying for this? If I replace the rotors with aftermarket, any suggestions on what is best? Any suggestions on how to get Ford to pay for this? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

BTW - These are front brakes, rear is drum with ABS.

My 97f150 has the same problem. I had my originals turned and replaced with after market rotors with seemingly the same problem. Next time I am going to look for a heavy rotor....if they exist.

The rotors have been cut down to minimum thickness for weight savings as well as the opportunity to have you stop back by to buy new ones since you cannot turn them (usually) after they warp. The rotors today (stock and aftermarket) are all about the same thickness. If they made them thicker I don't think that the calibers would fit over them with new pads since they were not designed for that.

However...

You can get rotors that have been cold treated. I use the ART (Applied Rotor Technology) rotors. They have a web site and my experience with them matches what they say the rotors will do. The rotors do not warp.

I think the web site is at appliedrotortechnology.com. FTE did a test on the the rotors for an Explorer a couple of years ago and I believe it is still listed.

My 2000 F-150 4x4 did the same thing last month with 26,000 km,s on it. They said a caliper was sticking, needed to turn the rotors and replace the pads. The warrenty on brakes is only for the first year, I had to pay also. NorminN.B.:-X23

I`ve got a `97 w/ 112k on it.
Replaced the front pads, didnt turn the rotors or replace them. The rear shoes I`ll replace this fall for the first time.
I hate shoes, wished they go disk all the way around.

Braking is like it was new.

Lucky I guess.
Really never had any problems with it. Just changed the plugs at 100k and now getting a miss fore on #2. I`ll find some wires to replace the old ones........any suggestions on what kind of wires or just stick w/ oems.

I would stay with stock wires. The distributor on those EFI vehicles is hot. 2" spark is no problem. When I used stock wires on my Crown they came with a lifetime warrenty. I kept the receipt and box on that one.

A 100 clams sounds about what I paid for the wires for the Crown Vic.

Update on my brake problem 7-15-02. The dealer did tell me that the brake rotors and pads were only covered for 12 months/12k miles, but agreed to listen to me anyway. Since I had never towed, hauled heavy loads, etc. - I told them I felt the wear was premature and should be considered for warranty work. The service manager agreed and asked the regional service rep. for approval. Ford aggreed to turn the rotors and provide labor for free, I bought the new pads.

It wasn't really what I wanted - I thought they should do the whole job, but it was better than I expected. I can't blame Ford for not covering the whole thing, they don't know how I drive. So overall, I am pretty satisfied with the result. If you have a what you think is a legitimate claim, present it well and ask for consideration, you may get something out of it.

HAS anyone experienced what i have since i bought this (used with 54,000 miles on it)
was in great condition 1 owner and very well maintained
but i noticed....

AT SLOW SPEEDS..very slow..like parking lot speed..if i hit the brakes fairly heavy...the ABS kicks in..but seems to lag in time a bit..it actually lets them lock first(almost like it is trying to find the breaking point ) then it seems to kick in..
but this critical slippage time seems to be all you would need to get into a fender bender at the right moment and right distance and speeds.
I have tested it with many people and everyone agrees it does not seem right..is it common in the 2000 F150 ...or just mine?
did i explain this well?

Welcome to FTE mailderrick! You might want to check the tone ring for the ABS sensors at both front wheels for rust or dirt build up that is interfering with the ABS sensor and resulting in your symptom. Good luck!

thank you, i will be certain to check that outi was also reading about warped rotors in the forum..is that a possibility..and someone also suggested ART rotors? i have no knowledge of these ...i will say that the truck has been doing it for over a year..and now on the highway it just started developing this thing wheni apply the brake you can feel vibration...
thought i would add that
thank you again
