Question on replacing front brake pad and rotors.
2001 F150 4x4 Supercrew
I am replacing pads and rotors, new spring clips and lube, in the past I never had this problem and was wondering if anyone else has run into this.
I found the new pads fit very tight into the calipers I had a very hard time getting them to fit into the slot this was true for both the inner and outer on both sides. I have changed pads a number of times in the past on different vehicles and never ran into this.
After getting them all installed I drove the truck about 2 miles applying light pressure everything felt good, when returning home I could smell the temperature so I wet my finger and it almost stuck to the rotor, much hotter than normal I am sure.
I am questioning the dimensions of the new NAPA pads, they look close but I didn’t have a way to accurately measure.
Could the pads be out of spec? (I did purchase the cheaper NAPA pads ~$20.)
Any other ideas the rotors were not this hot prior to the new pads and rotors.
Thanks,
John

Mine were about $50 from Autozone and did not fit poorly. I had a good bit of smell for the first 50 miles or so. It did get hotter than normal. I think the rotors had a coating on them that smelled bad until it burned off and it took a bit for the pad to wear into place. Now, there is no smell, no extra heat, and everything works fine. You might try new pads especially since you have had experience and know how they should feel going in. You probably did this, but is it both sides getting that hot? If only one you might have a stuck piston or something.

I would see if you could take them back and get a refund. I bought Bendix pads from Advance (~$60), last year, and they still look brand new after many off-road adventures. They grabbed 100x better than whatever was on there before.
New rotors have a special coating on them to prevent them from rusting. You should always spray them down with Brake cleaner and wipe off with a rag before installing.

Did you make sure your slides were not binding when you did your pads? I just used cheap autozone pads and rotors. I couldn't be happier. Everybody jokes it stops on a nickel. Between the tires, shocks, and brakes the front end will dang near hit the ground when you lock them up. Also I unhooked my ABS. ABS and MTR's = bad news.
