im new so sorry if this has already been posted, just point me in the right direction if it has. but i have an 04 f150 with the 5.4L. it has 4 cats, correct? ive herd of people cuttin the back two out and runnin duals or one in two out exhaust systems. i herd one online that sounds bad A$$...i want to try it on my truck, but will it hurt anything in the long run? im figuring its gonna set my check engine light off if i do? if i clear it will it come back again? or if i have it tuned or get a programmer with that keep everything going good? even if it aint hurtin nothin id rather not ride around with my check engine light on, im kinda picky about that. thankx
There are not only 4 cats, but 4 sensor to contend with. Removing the cats will throw up an error code, of that you can be sure.
Why dump the Cats? I have heard of guys straight piping from the cats back if you want it loud or get an aftermarket system that keeps them in place, which is what most people do, myself included, and forget about messing with the computer.
IMHO, it seems like a ton of problems to get rid of them for very little gain.
I would recommend getting a programmer if you want to do this. that way you can turn the rear o2 sensors off. There useless anyway to a point. the fwd 02's are the ones that read your lean/rich fuel information and the rear sensors just make sure the front cats are doing there job. I thought about doing this myself and a guy at work has done it to his 04 already. he lost low end but gained high end torque. its just like adding long tube headers. the sound did get louder and deeper. when i put my exhaust on, i ran with just strait pipes around the block to see what it would be like and the cats cut out alot of flow, which in turns cuts power. and noise i might add so strait pipes wont give you what your looking for. if your looking for any good performance gains out of cutting your cats then theres alot more work you would have to do but if its just for being loud and annoying ( thats pretty much my goal) then go for it. if you do throw a code, get a programmer so you can turn the rear sensors off and then there shouldnt be anymore problems after that.
