Hello
I am in the process of sanding my front fenders down on my Fairlane. It is very slow going can anyone tell me a real good make of sandpaper that will make this a little easier. I have a little square electric Makita sander but would buy something else if it would make like easier. Any advice on sanders and paper types would be greatly appreciated..
Thanks Luke
I have a 5inch electric Porter Cable orbital sander with velcro pad, it has lasted me 3 1/2 years. The square ones are ok but generally the orbital sanders will be more time efficient.
what i did on my fender, i sanded half of it and i was dissappointed at how long it took, so i wire brushed it down to the pink/red primer, this worked effectivly for me, then i wet sanded it down to the grey primer, and where it was rusted bad down to bare metal, and bondoed. then i primed it, sanded with 800 grit, primed it again and so on untill you sand it and cant see the pure metal anymore. I hope this helps!
I use a porter cable 6 inch dual action, sometimes called a random orbit sander. This type of sander is more powerful than the finish sander you're currently using but even with 40 grit paper it can still be slow going and dusty and after hours of constant sanding your hands will go numb, lol. What I have found works well is to first use Aircraft paint remover available in an aerosol spray can in the auto section of walmart. This will remove most of the finish then I follow up with 80 grit on the dual action sander to get what's left.

Went and got some aircraft stripper and wow that seemed to work great. There were alot of layers of paint and primer. We should be able to finish it with sanding soon. I will be getting a porter cable soon.. Thanks to all..
If you're stripping the paint I would get an inexpensive electric polisher and put a 3-M stikit 8" pad with a 36 or 40 grit disk. That takes paint off quick. Without the chemical mess.
