'Just a note of thanks to all who made my '96's headlights brighter. I used 1000 and 1500 sandpaper (dry) on my orbital sander , then rubbing compound on cloth by hand, made the night a lot brighter. I plan to put relays on the headlights, next, as I have a bunch leftover from a tow package job.
I missed that post, did the sanding effectively take out the "yellowing: that occurrs? or did you have a different problem?
Dan
My '96's plastic lenses were kinda yellow/foggy. The sandpaper took off this microscopic yellow film layer, I think. And the rubbing compound shined up the "raw plastic", no longer covered by the aged yellow film. Aerocolorado gave the recipe: Slice off those 3 bumps on the lens with a sharp wood chisel so you can use a power sander easily, get 1000 and 1500 grit sandpaper, get out the orbital sander, and go for it.
They sell hadlight polishing kits. They work like a charm. You use different grades of very fine wet sandpaper each getting finer. Then you use a polishing compound. Makes them look new.
Dumb question
Where do you get 1500 grit sandpaper? I don't remember seeing any that fine. Course I'm only looking at the box stores, and then not lately. Seems like the best I could ever find is about 400! I need to clean my headlights and I have a couple of mag lights that are scratched and dulled. Will it polish back to a clear finish? I did the brasso polish and it helped, but the headlights are still yellow.
Depending on how bad the yellowing and or scratches are you may need to use 1000 grit first to rub those out, and then move to finer paper. The kit I bought had 1000 grit, 1500, 2000, and 2500 and then the polishing paste. The sandpaper does most of the work and removes the small scratches that can leave a dull finish after you polish.
