If your TPS (potentiometer on drivers side of IP) is too advanced it will cause your transmission to hold on to the lower gears longer. It is telling your transmission controller how much throttle is being used.
If after fixing your speedo drive gear you are still having shifting issues I would look there.
I'm having the exact same problem, speedo is jumping, shifting erratic. I have replaced the speedo cable and the vss, gear is pink and does not appear to be worn. Is the gear (drive) in the transfer case plastic also, or is the drive gear metal? If it is plastic I will get both the drive and driven gear before taking the transfer case open. I have not replaced the sensor on the rear diff should I do this first as it is easier to access.

Tks
If you have a cable, then the sensor on the diffy will not affect the tranny (its used exclusively for the abs on those years of trucks). Yes, the drive gear as well as driven gears are both plastic, and fairly cheap to replace.
Got the gears and replaced them today, fixed all problems with shifting and speedometer jump. Many thanks for all the help I have recieved here. Hope this thread helps you as much. Merry Christmas to all
