It will also depend on your trim level. I have a XL and it does not have the plugins for many of the XLT type accessories. Ford does install different main wire harness.
Call the Kentucky plant. I had my local for dealer tell me one thing and I was told other things from various people. I got tire of not knowing whom was right so I call the Kentucky plant and was tole the following: all ford trucks have the main harness but you would need to buy additional "plug ins" to add things. I had an XL at that time and purchased a few plug ins to add additional things.
Some of these plug in's can be pretty extensive and it in of it's self may seem like a completely new wiring harness.
I believe the cab lights is a simple harness that plugs in behind the kick panel on the passenger side.
I also know there was a thread in here before about adding the overhead display to trucks that didn't come with it. They had part numbers and everything, but I never heard if anyone actually went through with it and got it to work.

I think the additional "plug ins" info from the plant is misleading. The plug maybe there but the wiring maybe missing. I can tell you for a fact on my 2005 XL, the truck is not wired or fused for any power door lock, power windows or any power seat accessories. The wires are just plain not there and the fused box for those postions are not prewired. So, i could go out and buy these harnesses but I will be dead on the fused wiring.
Also, Ford uses what they call Central Junction Boxes (CJB). The CJB's are clustered pass throughs that contain relay assemblies for the various configurations. Multiple accessories or functions may pass through one CJB. The kicker is if you try to plug a new harness to lets say go from standard headlight switch to a auto headlight photosensitive systems, it may need a different CJB for the relay setups and pass through.
I have been through this senario of trying to add accessories to my XL. A XL wired Ford is just not a XLT harness with various XLT accessories or features waiting to be plugged in. The are not 100% common but different.
Must be that some items can be added and as mentioned others require alot more "stuff" then it worth. As for the my statement that was what I was told in Kentucky. I added AC and Overhead lights to the XL that I had.
......I added AC and Overhead lights to the XL that I had.
That is because those are options that can come on a XL if so ordered. Our XL's are just glorified fleet sales trucks. To get all the other accessories, Ford forces you into the XLT trim if you want it.
