I have a 1984 F150 4x4 and the front axle universal joints are shot. I just bought the universal joints, but I have been getting conflicting stories on hoe to chage them out. Does the front axle slide out through the spindle? Once out how are the universals held in. They don't look like a drive axle universal setup. Any help would be apprciated.
The quick and dirty: 1.remove brake caliper (hang on wire out of the way ,not buy hose!) 2.diassemble locking hub 3. remove wheel bearings remove the spindle (the easy way is to rent a slide hammer) pull out axle. the u-joits have internal snap rings douse with PB blaster or wd-40 ect pop off the snap rings pound out the joints reassemble in reverse order replacing all seals and repacking all bearings . That said I recomend buying the haynes or chilton or factory repair manual it's got pictures and text on this procedure. If you are going to keep this truck it's one of the best investments you'll ever make. I've been working on cars and trucks for 30+ years and I have all three and believe me they are well worn bibles of repair
The drivers axle will slide out the steering knuckle but the spindle must be removed. The passenger side will be the same but the how the axle is held in the diff. may be one of two types. On the out side small bolts removes a plate and then the axle will slide out or you may need to remove the diff. cover and remove a keeper to remove the axle!
