I know the only thing of major difference on the gates is the window shape, so if you tried to use the 85 gate with the 85 window on the 78/79 the window would not fit because the corners are different but I think if you are using the 85 cap as well it will work.
I guess the only way to find out for sure is to try it.
FWIW- I had a friend with a 79 bronco, and I swear it had a late eighties gate on it. I don't know how it was done, but I remember the body lines just not quite looking right. The reason I say late eighties was the trim on the gate. If you didn't know your trucks pretty good, you'd never know it because the truck had been painted. We even discussed the fact of it having a later gate on it, surprised that it fit. Maybe someone put the seventies style glass in the eighties style gate? I'll definitely be watching this thread, maybe we can come up with an answer.
If that's true then it should fit all the way up to the last year they made them tho right? We can put my 85 top on 94 nichols truck, I know, but if the 78 and 79's fit too, it would stand to reason that you could swap any of the big bronco's tops and/or gates. Any one else? The curiosity is killing me on this one! I can't get ahold of my friend to ask. Some kind of phone prob. I'll call him at work tomorrow.
After checking LMC,s Bronco parts book I found that the only thing that is different is the window glass the 1978/79 window is different than the 1980 to 1996 window.
which means like I said and did you only have to have the correct window for the gate all the gates are the same with all internal parts being interchangable.
In other words all windows fit all gates but the 78/79 windows are different top rounded edges than the 80/96 so you will have to make sure your window matches your cap year.
Cheers,Rick.
BTW had my new 79 Bronco out for a little 4x4ing and it pounds excellently.
