Mod motor question
#16
check this pic out.
i think its way cool. a DOHC ford mod motor with an old school looking intake. its going in a hot rod, but could be cool in a truck. but its still EFI in this applictaion.
I have seen the Carb / mod motor intakes, and the igintion box needed to run this setup. ill look for the links for you.
i say do it! and try to keep it EFI. but a carb on one of these would be OK too.

I don't know if going carbed is cheaper:
Intake $670
MSD ignition module $410
Carburetor approx. $300
Total - $1380
Your also limited to a 5spd (unless you have a 91-2 Lincoln engine) or you run a $425 transmission controller for the 4R70W.
Where as fuel injection costs:
Wire harness $850 or nearly free if you do it yourself
External fuel pump $150
Fuel line and filter approx $50.
Total - $1050 or $250.
It's all a matter of choice but they only have single plane intake manifolds which isn't the best for a street cruiser.

FYI for all to see
You a few different options concerning Ignition on your modular engine.
Electromotive XDi
We sell this system setup for the modular engines. It is a coil pack based system that uses the factory crank trigger with a 62 tooth trigger wheel. We use Accel GM DIS coil packs finished in charcoal grey installed on billet aluminum brackets that mount directly to the rear of our intake manifolds. This ignition system does not require a laptop for tuning. There are three pots on the side of the box for setting up your timing curve. This system comes from us with Taylor 8mm ignition wires in your choice of black, blue, red, yellow, orange, purple, and teal green. You have your choice of red, blue, or clear coil brackets.
Electromotive XDi control box, wiring harness, coils with brackets, and spark plug wires. 1134.95
MSD 6-Mod Controller
This system is for use on 99-up modular engines using coil on plug ignition. It can be retrofitted to earlier engines by replacing the valve covers with 99-up valve covers and obtaining the correct coils. The crankshaft and camshaft position sensors are the same for all years of the 4-valve engine so no change of sensors would be required. This is a nice controller that does require a laptop for tuning which can be good or bad depending on whether or not you have a laptop and are comfortable tuning with it. The software is very easy to use and provides some nice features. This system is also very cost effective for the 99-up engines.
MSD 6-mod controller 425.00
There are currently two different options for distributors out of the front of the valve cover or belt driven off the crankshaft.
The contacts for the distributor drive off the valve cover is:
Triangle Speed Shop
19474 Highway 62 South
Orange, Texas 77630
409-792-9744
Champion Racing Heads
13 Hargrove Grade
Palm coast, Florida 32137-5114
386-446-4488
The approximate cost of the camshaft driven distributor mod is 900.00 with you supplying the valve cover. Contact Triangle Speed Shop or Champion directly for exact pricing and configurations.
The contact for the belt driven distributor is:
Haywood Custom Speed
6204 Daimler Way Ste 103
Raleigh, North Carolina
27607
919-854-4774
I do not have a price for the belt driven distributor at this time. Contact Haywood Custom Speed for pricing.
One final option is to use the factory computer. This will require building your own harness and having the computer flashed to turn off the anti-theft (PATS) system and to keep from throwing codes. This would be the most time consuming of the options but could be done for probably less than 500.00. You are on your own though as I am not aware of any company that has done this and offers it for sale.

Hey Dennis..look at the feul injection tab on the web site you referenced. They list a number of stand alone computer companies.

Sorry if I repeat anything that has been said, didn't have time to read everything. I have seen a DOHC 4.6L installed in a mid 40's Ford truck. They went ahead and used the Stang instrument cluster, which I am sure made it super easy to use the stock stang computer and I would bet the PATS system even worked with it. Here are a few pics I snapped:
As you can see they kept the EFI, I also think they used the Mustang tranny.
On a side note I know KarKraft is putting out a Carb'd 4.6L and 5.4L:

Sat down last night with some of my friends over at fnsweet and talked about this. Looked at what my plans were and what I really wanted out of the truck. What I decided was I am going to keep the cobra engine for the Roush need a little more speed for those open track days. I am talking to a guy now that has a warehouse full of BB ford FE stuff getting prices on a 390 4v from him. I think that for fun and cruising the 390 will be both impressive and cool at the same time. I think the Cobra is just to new technology wise for the look I am going for....but again this is just my .02

Jared,
My son's freind put a 5.4 Lincoln Navigator engine in his Mustang. That's one huge engine. He kept the fuel injection and added an intercooled turbo. He just had it dyno tuned and it puts out over 600RWHP and almost 700 lbft of torque with 13# boost. I took a short ride in it and it's soooo quick, it's scary. So there's lot's of potential.
