Mod motor question

Has anyone here put a newer mod motor in their truck? I picked up my truck a few days ago and was looking around it and staring at my other project and thought maybe I could fit my 2001 Cobra engine into this wonderful 53 I just bought. To do that though I would run a carburator. Figured I would find out if anyone here has done that combo and had advice?

if you are going to switch to a carb why not just go with a 351, they are bolt in

Only because I have the cobra engine in my garage. If I could get a nice used 351 I would go that route. Cant seem to find one.

I would run it with the EFI! It would be a modern flat head look! I plan on doing this or a 5.4 in my 51. You have plenty of room and their are lot of company's now making the computers and harness's to do this swap.

can you send me some links for these companies. I am interested in what it would take to run the full EFI in the truck...beyond the gas tank and pump.

it is actually pretty easy to re-use the factory wiring kit and computer, the choise is yours if you want to go full tilt like i am, i chose to use all the wiring from donor truck, lights, gauges, all the controls, everything!

hell if you are planing on scraping the cobra, why not yank the front suspension also

Yes!!

I agee why not use the front suspension too? you have to do a little creative cutting and bracing, but the suspension unbolts, and then you'd have to cut the towers and make some braces. You could use the rearend also and have 4 wheel disc!! When I get a donor car or truck, I figure anything I can use is FREE!!! I already paid for the whole car or truck, so why not?? I'm not a big fan of the regular modular motors, but the Cobra motors are way cool, have alot of forged parts and way better in alot of areas. There are alot of companys out there who make stand alon wiring harness's for this swap as already said.Make sure to buy a quality harness and go for it!! Or use the stock harness with the cluster?

(Dark side) I have a 50f1 that I'm putting a 350 TPI out of an IROC I took the whole wiring harness out of the donor. Even took the dash out of the car to make sure I got all the wiring. And I bought a stand a lone harness. It's not in yet but that's the plan. .....RUSTY

To me running a carb on an EFI engine is taking a step backwards. Even with a carb you would still need a computerized ignition system capable of reading the stock cam sensor.

Hey guys, your comments about "several companies" offering harnesses for the mod motors caught my eye. I have a 5.4 Lightning engine I'm planning to install in my 56 project and the last time I checked (about a year ago) I could only find two companies that would make a harness and both were a $1000.00+. These were the Detail Zone and Street & Performance. Who are the others?? I would like to contact them. Thanks.

F100newb- I suggest running the EFI if you can get a harness reasonable.

Lets get this straight here...NO ONE IS SCRAPPING A COBRA. That to me would be sacrilege. I have an engine out of a Cobra that was rolled. I had planned to put it in my Roush but have not gotten to it yet. The only reason to run Carb it is would be a much easier install. IF you go carb on a mod motor and use and MSD mod 6 then most of the work is done for you. If I run EFI then I have to get a harness and computer and diffrent fuel pump and so on.

I am really looking into a lot of ideas right now like I have a guy that has a nice 390 I am looking at. Just not sure yet...I want something that has power but I don't want pro stock power. I think that anything around 300 would be more then fine for the truck.
