I just noticed your sig...How does that 302 do in your 1990? I have the same truck, but with an inline 6 300cid...Pulls like heck in the lower end.
Almost never use 1st and can start in 3d.
It does pretty good, its torque-y for a smallblock. The M5OD lack of granny gear makes me mad, i usually start in 1st or 2nd (first for hills mainly) Its a high revving engine though because my truck (extended cab long bed) is so heavy, which hurts my mileage quite a bit (9 town 10 hwy).
But that engine is definanly a workhorse, we grenaded one block at 72000 (in 1993ish) from a failed oil pump at freeway speeds, but Ford replaced it under warrenty and this engine has been fine. Most recent work was a new water pump, thermo, and rad i did at the end of summer and she's runnin great again.
my only complaint would be that i think the 351 would have been better matched to the size of the truck for fuel economy.
So hows the paint doin on your truck? the typical late 80's primer issues?
In your case, I don't think size matters!...With the help of Summit and Jeggs, I built a pretty good 302 that I put in a 1968 F100. The critter would spin some tires, but would not put too much into its torque...That was with a three speed converted to the floor and a 9inch rear...Forget what gearing I had in the rear.
Run a 512 Comp cam, and dyno'd at 638 HP. Too much middle and high end.
The 90 I have in my avatar has the 300 in it...Nothing built over what the factory installed. Fuel injected 4 speed. When I lock her in to 4wd, in granny, she will pull. Not sure how she will do against a modern diesel, but would not count her out...especially with me driving and knowing how she works!
busy day here, a couple of trees topped themselves behind the fence and a couple of horses got loose and went trudging through my back yard. I and the neighbor caught them and he and another neighbor took them to where ever they belong. I had to stay home cuz the Kid was here alone.
