was just wonderin whats average automatice trans temp... 99 f350 7.3 of course... am just curios as to what ya'll run cause i am lookin at gauges now and was wonderin how hot it should go up to cause the one im lookin at goes up to 250... hope it dont get much hatter than that... Donny D
That should be just fine. Normally tranny temps run @ 70 degrees over outside air temps. Towing will run hotter. If you hit 220 you want to pull over and let her cool down. After the tranny mods I haven't seen mine go over 190 while towing my 10,000 lb 5th wheel.
Regular tranny fluid starts to break down around the 225 range, if you tow alot synthetics is the way to go. Cost more but can handle the higher temps much better.

I've never seen over 180*. Pulling 8K over an 11K ft pass, and not taking it easy. 200* seems like an issue, to me. Bigger cooler? If towing a load is a regular thing for you...
200 is NOT an issue. If you get to 220F you want to find a safe place to stop and let the truck fast idle in park or nuetral. These transmissions are designed to go to 250F for a short time with NO damage.
The transmission might be able to withstand the 200 or 250* temps but the fluid can't. It begins to sheer and lose it's lubricating qualities and then trans wear starts. Check this out:
Yeah I have no doubt that it could be a marketing tool. I will take your word for it. I never see over 150 to 160* and that's in Houston heat so I know I am good. Appreciate your input.
Just speaking for myself, I will not drive around with tranny temps above 200. Fortunately it is not an issue for me. If it becomes one, there will be some aux cooling.
Just because it may or may not be able to take it is not good enough reason for me when keeping it below 200 is not that hard. Especially since mine also goes through the radiator too. I don't want that heat soaking into the coolant either.
I would think the cooler, the better for longevity. And my tranny gauge redlines at 260*. just my 0.02. Of course I'm lucky I don't tow much heavier than the boat.
Is it better for the trans to run on the cooler side.I see only 160 max when unloaded, would it be better to run a real big cooler like 28,000k to get in the 130 -140 range. Thanks
