Speaking of temp gauges, is there a way to check their accuracy?

I bought/ installed a Cyberdyne digital trans temp guage. I read somewhere to shoot the pan with an infrared thermometer immediately after a drive (long enough to allow the pan to heat up sufficiently) and compare. When I do this I get a difference of close to 28 degrees cooler on the pan. Is this to be expected or is my $65 gauge not very accurate (or not a perfect ground on the sending unit) ?

Thanks.......Mark

I run an Auto Meter gauge. My tranny is a built 4R100 and uses Royal Purple. When I originally installed the tranny the company i purchased from said the plumbing to a replcement 7.3 cooler would be fine and to bypass the rad cooler (too contaminated)

I ran the truck for a year like that. When I put a gauge on it was fine in the cooler weather but when it started getting hot the temp would rise to 205.

I have since installed a 31 row cooler from a 6.0 truck. Towed in 85 to 90 dree temps to the mountains in WV pulling a 32' hauler with two jeeps. Never went more than 175 degrees! Best mod so far!!!!!

I would go on the 210 to 220 range. Your taking miles away if your get hotter. That is what the shops around here go by.

Seems like the best cooler to install on the truck is from a 2003 that came with a 6.0 motor.

This cooler is much taller than the small one that come in the 7.3 trucks. It is tall enough to reach up into the airflow from the fan. Thus at slower speeds you get airflow through the cooler unlike the smaller one that sits behind the bumper and only gets air while moving.

It does bolt into the stock mounts. However it has 2 - 1/2" hose barbs for fittings. You will have to adapt these to your existing lines. I was able to find the plumbing I needed at the home store but any good auto parts would have it also. Be sure to use transmission hose and quality clamps.

You can get them from ford and other places I reccomend a new one to guard against contamination from another truck. Even though they can be flushed not worth the risk in my opinion.

You can also change your tranny pan to a deeper pan. It will hold more fluid and allow for some cooling also.

If i install the 6.0 cooler how much reduction in temp will i see and also how much does the cooler cost.

I spent a little over $300.00 for the one I bought. I would say you are going to see an easy 30 - 40 degree drop. That was my experience.

Like I said I could not push it over 175 on a trip through the mountains of WV on 2 lane roads pulling about 11,000 lbs. It was 85 to 90 degrees air temp. and fairly humid.

you can do a search here and find many post about this mod.

I just did my first big trip after my gauge install. I am only seeing about 140-150 at the highest. Three hours on freeway w bed loaded with jon boat and duck hunting gear. Air temp - 65ish. Just so you know, my gauge has a yellow zone at the bottom, too. Idk if this means it is bad to run (hard) with the fluid too cold!?!
