Cleaning the FPR screen

Well my attempt at cleaning the FPR screen didn't go quite as smooth as I hoped. Couple questions:

I damaged the FRP o-ring putting it back on. Ford should have one (or two )?

After cleaning the screen and putting it back together I started it and noticed the leak. Took the FPR back off and found the torn o-ring. But I noticed too that the screen already had some more crap on it. Where does fuel come from before it goes to the screen and is there anything else I should clean? I don't totally understand the fuel flow on these engines yet. I was just reading a post about dirt on the bottom of the filter housing. Could that be a possibility?

Thanks for any advise. I'm still pretty new to the PSD but learning more and more every day on here.

the o-ring can be had at any hardware store. just bring in the old one and match it up for size. the junk on the screen comes from the filter housing. here is a fuel flow break down for you

tank, selector valve, up to valley of engine to low pressure (diaphram) side of the fuel pump, out to fuel filter, through fuel filter to high side (piston) of the fuel pump, to the back of the heads, through fuel galley to feed injector, excess goes to the front of the head through flexible hoses to fuel pressure regulator, (this is where I get a little fussy) I think the fuel from the lines then goes to the return line but there is also some fuel return through the screen from the filter housing to the return line.

Or the fuel from the front of the heads goes thru the FPR into the fuel filter housing then all the excess together goes through the screen back to the tank.

Either way there is fuel being returned to the tanks through the screen and there can be junk accumulated in the fule filter housing along with free water.
