Can some one please explain the fuel system to me? The part that I dont understand is the fuel return. Why is the fuel returned to the tank? Is it because all the left over pressure at the injectors needs some were to go? Hate to sound stupid.
No such thing as a stupid question around here. You're about right for the fuel being returned to the tank though. The fuel pump is running 100% at all times when the truck is running. So it has to be able to supply enough fuel to feed the injectors while at full throttle. However, when the injectors are not needing all that fuel, the left over fuel has to go somewhere or the pressure in the supply line would rise too high, so the excess fuel is simply returned to the tank.
By doing a intank mod like removing the mixing chamber is a filter needed inbetween the tank and the pump? If so is two filters too much for the system? Seems like the extra filter would slow down the fuel flow.
If you keep the stock fuel bowl, no additional filter is needed. However, a good quality filter, like a Dahl, won't add much of a restriction an will provide additional fuel filtering.
[QUOTE=cdiddy]So this pre pump kit I would get with no filter right or is this a good filter? Lot of people say this will help out my fuel system alot.
get the kit with the filer..it wont restrict the fuel flow..it will catch any grub and water from the tank before it gets to the fuel pump..
I went with the filter and also added a Carter 72gph lift (booster) pump ahead of the stock pump to make sure that I never saw any problems from pressure drop across my new Baldwin filter that came with the pre-pump intank kit. My install is in my gallery.
I run a $3 Fram see through right in front of my pump. Almost looks like a lawnmower filter except much bigger. I have eliminated my in-tank crap and run a sump. No helper pump. No problems thusfar and decent dyno #s.
What will you gain with all of the helper pump and Dahl filter stuff? Don't know. At least there will be adequate fuel to the stock pump which is IMO the limiting factor anyhow. Kwikk decided to skip all that and put his stock type pump, or primary pump right in the tank. Again, same pump limitations without having to lift fuel out of the tank. My pump is gravity fed.
Think all of this over for your bang for the buck decision. I could revert back to a stock type pickup with little difficulty but have no desire to do so. Also, consider that I used a sink strainer as a sump because I didn't feel like paying over $200 for a billet unit that they no longer sell due to safety reasons. So now I am a safety hazard.

So what kind of change will I see with the pre pump in tank mod and the carter pump compared to the stock set up? Are these mods worth the money.
The in tank mod & pre pump kit will also quiet down the engine cackle. The stock fuel system has a bad habit of letting air into the fuel system when the tank gets below the 1/4 level, and air is no good for the injectors in the long run.
