Yes, it will bolt on. However, depending on whether it is a standard 428 ThunderJet or a 428 Cobra Jet manifold will determine if there will be a port matching problem. The CJ manifold has a lot bigger ports than the 390, where the 428TJ is the same manifold that came on the 390 4 barrel engine.
Uh, there was no 428 Thunderjet. That was a 429 only thing. The 428CJ manifold ports were the same as the pre 68 390 ports. The 68-up 390's ports are filled at the bottom, so there will be a mismatch, but it will not affect the way they seal. There will be a hitch in the flow that you won't be able to feel in the seat of the pants meter.
If you're going to buy a new aluminum intake, either the Performer RPM or a Blue Thunder 428PI/427MR intake would be the best two choices. Or if you can get an original 428PI/427MR intake that's also another choice. The original 428CJ intake is the same piece, but cast from iron instead and 55 lbs heavier. Another good choice if you want to upgrade the 2 bbl is Holley's 500 cfm 2 bbl. This is a bolt on swap for replacing the Autolite 2 bbl.
I thought the iron CJ was a little different from the aluminum PI? I too thought they were the same for years but I recall something different about the 2. This was around the time Jay B was doing his intake comparo on the single 4v's. Either Jay or someone (Shoe maybe?) compared the differences. I'd have to look back at that to be positive tho.
There are minor differences, but for all practical purposes, they're pretty much the same. I think the MR427 intake ports are filled in the bottom to match the heads. There were 2-3 casting numbers for the 428PI/427MR intakes, ditto for the iron CJ.
as for the performer RPM, isnt this made for a higher power band, should i just go with the performer, my truck with compound gearing hardly ever sees up to 4000 rpm, and if im not mistaken the performer is a dual plane, and the RPM is a single plane, if the RPM is better even on my application, then hell i'll run it.
The RPM is a high rise dual plane but works well on the bottom end too. The Performer is simply a stock intake cast in aluminum. Blue Thunder is made by Blue Thunder , do a search on the net and you'll find it. Better quality casting the the Edelbrocks.
