I'm getting ready to take the cab off the frame of my 56 F100. The engine and trans are still in place. Can anyone tell me how to remove the shift lever from the top of the trans before I try to "wing it"? Also, does anyone know how much the stripped down frame weighs?
Lift the boot, unscrew the cap, and there's a little pin you have to drive out that holds the shifter onto the shift mechanism. Should come right off after you pop the pin out.
Just guessing 250-300 lbs. for the frame.
What do you mean by stripped down frame? In the context of you removing the cab, I'm guessing you mean a rolling chassis? Engine/trans, rear end, front suspension, just no bodywork? Probably around 1800 lbs.
Stripped down frame to me means everything gone but the frame only.
I stripped mine to have powder coated a few yrs. back.
Put it on a trailer and delivered it to the powder coater.
Had a friend help me lift it off the trailer and into the shop, one on each end.
It was a chore but we did it.
That's why I guessed it at 250-300 lbs.
Now this was a '58 frame but I think a '56 is simular enough so it should be close.
Thanks for the info on the shifter. Taking this thing apart has been a pain. More bolts have broken off than actually coming out because of rust. I've gotten alot of use out of my grinder removing carrage bolts too. I'm looking forward to putting it all back together again using new hardware ... should go much faster.
