I've installed a TCI IFS in my '55 F100, and positioning the new motor (side mounts) it appears the old transmission mount will be in the way, regardless of how much I move the motor forward or back. I have the body and bed off the frame.
I'm using an aftermarket rear trans mount/cross member. Are you folks just removing that forward trans mount, repositioning it, or...?
I'm installing a BB/auto trans, should I be concerned with frame twist if I remove it? Are you all beefing up your frames, cross members, etc?
I've done two trucks, a 49 F-1 and a 48 F-3. I used a Chrysler torsion bar front suspension in both. In both cases I was unable to use the original cross member since it would have mounted the transmission too high so I cut it out and made my own transmission cross member. If you can fabricate it so that it ties both the top and bottom frame rails together it will be plenty sturdy enough.
Thanks to all of you. I too am using a TCI trans mount/cross member, it only attaches to the bottom frame rail. I'm heading out to the shop now to remove the original cross member, position the motor and trans and weld the frame motor mounts on. Once that's done and the new trans mount is positioned, I might consider reinstalling the original piece just for structural integrity, if it will fit and not be in the way.
I'll also take a look at the thread link you sent Effie. Thanks again.
Truck #1 I modified the stock crossmember for duals, welded a pad to it and slid it further back in the frame.
Truck #2 I used a camaro crossmember and a piece of steel to tie the upper ends of the frame together. The steel was necessary, without it the frame would twist if you stood on the running board mount. The factory crossmember was already butchered otherwise I would of done the same mod as truck #1.
Great pictures Dave. I removed the cross member and have the motor trans in place. Once I have the motor mounts welded to the front frame and position the trans mount, I will modify the old piece and install it further back since the new trans mount doesn't tie the upper and lower frame rails together. If that doesn't work I'll fabricate one.
Then search for some 3 1/4 inch spring perches for an 8.8 rear. I've found a couple of leads in the forums, but nothing specific. Anxious to get the chassis on the ground again!
