Fan removal tool

Is there such a thing? I need to replace the fan on my truck and I'm pretty sure there is, but want to know what to ask for when I go to the parts store later.

My local parts store doesn't have the correct size. They don't even have tools for rent/loan anymore

for the big fan to water pump nut - a big crescent and hammer. Tap tap and it will unscrew by hand.

I found out the nut is 45mm, I don't believe I have a crescent that big. I'll be checking a few places tomorrow after work.

I just used a big ol pipe wrench and a big C clamp to hold the pulley in place while removing the nut.

If you use a drift & a hammer , just tap on the outer most part of the fan nut & it should come right loose ,(Emphasis on tap...)

I found a large crescent (24") at Harbor Freight or Discount Tools for a pretty cheap price a while back.

The fan nut should be a 1 7/8 nut. What I did is removed a couple bolts holding the pully on. I took a piece a steel bar stock, about a 1/4 in thick, 1" wide and about 30 " long and drilled a hole in it about 3" from the end. I then used the bolt from the waterpump pulley and screwed the bar stock on the pulley. It ends up working like a spanner wrench,as you rotate the fan nut the bar stock will jam up and hold the pulley and allow the nut to break free. I did not marr anything up doing it this way. I also had to use a dead blow hammer striking the wrench to get it to break free. They do make a fan nut tool that holds the pulley by fitting over the bolt heads. The one I just saw said for the Ford 7.3.

I use a air hammer with a long bit, but you have to be very careful not to let it jump off the nut. It can do more damage to other parts. Just tap it once, and spin it off by hand. The drift, and hammer, that Action4478 said is probably a safer idea. After you break it loose, it just spins off by hand. You would be very lucky to find a crescent wrench thin enough to be usefull for removing the fan clutch. It's pretty tight in there. If I remember right, the correct tool was very thin, and had a half inch drive hole in it for a ratchet to fit. I dont remember, .......... I will re post when I sober up, and my memory comes back. I hope I can remember posting this at all.

This link will give you the info you're looking for:

They are spendy at around $150 for the set of two. I'm lucky enough to have a machinist two houses down who owns a 7.3L. He's made all kinds of 7.3L specialty tools that I am fortunate enough to borrow when needed.

I too used the method described by wlihntr & Rich in CO before my neighbor made his set, and it works just fine.

Here's the pic and #'s for the two wrenches Ford lists for this repair:

Good luck and I hope that helps,

Austin

I finally got time to replace the fan. It turns out the nut is not 45mm. I ended up buying a 1 7/8 wrench from Northern Tool and it fits good, just slightly larger than the nut, but not enough to worry about rounding it off.

I started by removing the belt, then siphoning out the coolant in the reservoir and removing the 3 bolts securing it(8mm) Once the bolts are removed, remove the small hose on the right side and rotate the reservoir 90 degrees CCW to get it out of the way. Then remove the upper hose from the radiator and tie it out of the way, then the 2 bolts securing the fan shroud(8mm) can come out. Next, take a 6" or larger c clamp and clamp it on the water pump pulley to hold it in place while you break the large fan clutch nut loose. After the nut is broke loose, you should be able to rotate the whole fan/clutch assembly by hand to remove it from the water pump. After the fan comes off, remove it and the shroud at the same time.
