Hey John, I think if you paint the bumper to match you might have to remove and paint the grill, and also paint the rear bumper to match. They look nice like this. The paint will chip and show more damage than the chrome will though.JMHO. Take care Budd. Country
i love chrome and stainless..especially on a solid color truck..if you push or pull out some one again hooking to the bumper,..the paint will peal very easly..chrome wont...but its your ride john...
Again im goin with paint, if i had the resources=$$$ i would try to make my truck a little different than everyone elses cause thats how i am You have the 05 headlights and grill that are chrome i would go with a body paint for the bumper and maybe get chrome tow hooks or something. EVERYONE HAS A CHROME BUMPER, look at DCspecials 01 his looks sweeeeeeeeeeet, with a painted bumper. but its your mule, i would also weight the price difference too
After looking at your gallery, I'd say chrome would probably look better on your truck.
Has the 05 grille you have has been cut to fit the 99-04 bumper? If it has, I think you may need another grille. There would be a big gap between the bumper and grille.
I got the bumper off ebay, its the last part of the 05 conversion, but its not chrome, its painted nasty gray.
The poll is to find out if I swhould aste my time painting or just chrome the bumper.
Thank you.
Actually you should just send me the bumper.
My chrome bumper is starting to show it age (rust under the chrome) and I am thinking on getting a Black color bumper. Black over the gray would work, and any scratches can be repainted. Re-chroming is a lot harder.
Dave - They have them ebay, just search for super duty bumper, you will find them.
Mike - The grille was cut to fit, and now it looks like I need to buy another grille to fit this bumper. The old one will be for sale when I get the new grille, but in the mean time, i will be running the gap.
Countrycar has made a good point on the paint aspect of this, if i paint it, it will chip. My hood has chips in it already, and where I drive It will have chips in it next week.
DC's truck is just badazz. Im just afraid of it being to red, and with the SS panels, it might look wierd, and I am going to be going to chrome rims, instead of these nasty alumnuim can never look good rims.
I havnt found out how much chrome is going to be, I will prep it for chrome by stripping the gray paint off the bumper completly the day Im taking it there, so they just need to do the actual chrome work. If anyone has any idea on how much, they charge for chroming a bumper please let me know. Everywhere is closed today, so im screwed until monday knowing that price.
I was trying to recall what that style is called, the painted stlye. It's called the Sport Truck look. You see alot of F-150's in this style because they come from the factory like that. Yeah it looks nice. Sorry John don't know how much to chrome a bumper. I think it's cheaper to buy one off e-bay already chromed than to have one chromed. But I believe the quality of the crhoming will also come in to play when you get it done yourself. It won't be a generac job. There always brighter and triple dipped. And in your area I'd say that a good thing. Take care. Country
I couldnt find one already chromed, and ford wanted 300$ just for the chrome bumper, that being said...IT WAS JUST THE BUMPER! no plastics, no mounts nothing. I paid that for the whole bumper! I am in the motor city, so i might find a good price somewhere, im gonna have to look around.

John, have you talked to a plating shop about the prep? I do not know about the prep requirements for dip or beauty chrome (automotive) but I do know about electro hard chrome and the prep is a lot more involved than just removing the paint. The surface has to be as smooth as possible and all scratches removed. It then must be shined up to where it almost looks like it's plated already. Any surface imperfections that are present before plate will not only show up after plate but will look worse as they really stand out. I supervise a plating shop as part of my duties here at work.
Not sure how much they charge for plating a bumper but I would imagine somewhere around 200 bucks.
I havent talk to anyone yet, it going to take about 2 weeks to get the bumper, since it has to be shipped frieght. So on monday if i have time after i get the alternator all worked out, and all the other stuff i gotta do, ill try to call, but the bumper is already purchased, 200$ still saves me money in the end going this route, since the final price i got from fords was around 650$.
