knocking in motor

i have a 99 expedition 4.6 and on the driverside there is a knocking sound in the motor what could this be

Could be lots of things.... can you be more specific? Does it do it all the time? Only when warm/cold? Only when idling? etc.

all the time when idling when u give it gas it gets louder it drives me nuts
