HELP!!!! My V10 pings while towing by 7500 lb 30ft fifth wheel. The motor is a factory long block with about 1500 miles on it; I did the install myself. There were no knock sensors when I changed the motor out but every thing I read says there are knock sensors. Does anyone know if some or all 2004 v10's came with knock sensors?
Was the catalytic converter replaced or checked when the new engine was installed? Back pressure from a plugged converter can and will cause pinging if it was damaged from a broken engine previously.

The exhaust is new from the manifolds back; new injectors, coils, and pretty much everything as far a emissions, ignition and fuel too. I pulled the battery cable to reset the computer and haven't towed with it since, I will next weekend though.
Are you aware of any years v10 w/o knock sensors? There weren't any when I pulled the motor and there is no open connector in the under hood harness where any would connect.
Is it throwing any error codes? It's a good thing to check before throwing parts at a truck.
No codes. I bought the truck for a grand with a bad motor. When I replaced the motor I replaced all the fuel, emission and exhaust components, figured I may as well have a nearly new truck, mechanically anyway.
My real question is has anyone ever come across an 2004 v10 w/o knock sensors?
Honestly can't answer whether or not there are any that don't have knock sensors but I would be surprised if there were any that didn't have one, from what I've been reading there should be one under the intake manifold behind the alternator and if you have nimble fingers can be replaced without pulling intake (I have never done this myself)
For what it's worth the lack of codes would in my opinion indicate that there are no sensors unhooked but it is possible you could of unknowingly plugged the knock sensor in and it is defective..... With a good cat and no codes I personally would clean the MAF sensor and check the TPS with an Multi meter before throwing parts at an unknown issue.

Reviving this thread....I'm replacing mine right now (squirrels or rats chewed the wire leading to the knock sensor). I can confirm you do not need to pull intake to get to the knock sensor on a 2001 V10 in an F350. But since the wire is chewed and missing from the sensor Im trying to figure out where the other end plugs into (not even sure which bank it exits). URGH!
****Edit 2 hours after post all back together, I found where the wire/plug terminates (back of the intake on passenger side). For future refrence, the intake does not need to be removed to replace the knock sensor on the above V10. Lowering the alternator out of the way provides enough room). Sure saved a lot of work!
