Knocking noise from 96 powerstroke

I have a 96 powerstroke diesel and it's been hard to start up lately in this cold michigan weather. I always have to keep it plugged in or it won't start. Today after I drove about 2 miles it started to make this bad knocking noise like a rod knock from a gas motor. Is there anything else that could be making this noise or am I looking at a new motor?

I live in the lansing area, it just started doing it today. I was going to have the glow plugs replaced this week, but, I'm thinking I might need a motor now. Damn, I hope not

how many miles on it????

There are 2 connectors on each valve cover by the vally....check those for burnt pins/wires....even take a wiff of the connector(rotten eggs=burnt harness)

Ron's got you covered on this but I just wanted to make you feel a little better. First of all welcome to FTE
You may not have a junk engine. A bad injector can sound like a rod knock...pretty sure that's where he's going with this.

Yup...thats where I was headed......I was just trying to cover the easier stuff first.

Jim...is there another way to test the injectors besides a buzz test???

Ron, Even the buzz test might not find the problem. It can buzz and still cause the knock. I think a Cylinder Contribution Test (CCT) would be a better way to ID the offending injector/cylinder. Either way he needs to get it on a scanner capable of either test. Too bad he's so far away (4-5 hours round trip), I could test it for him with my AE.
I wonder if there is a distinct engine miss, should be if an injector is acting up.

He's going to get up close and friendly with his GP problem pretty soon so with the valve covers off he'll be able to check all the other stuff, UVC's, rocker arm lash & watch the oil pizz holes on the injectors ect ect.

I might have to give you a call if you don't mind. I'll find out what the mechanic says after he looks at it.

You've got a number of possibilities. Injector, one or a few, glowplugs, which could be a faulty selenoid too, replaced my selenoid about a month ago. My 97 has a dead miss when it's real cold, below 20 degrees, for about a mile or so if I don't plug it in. Let us know what you find out.

I'll send my number but you may be better off posting the results here. More brains to pick.
Either way we'll get you though this. If you know the mechanic even better. You gotta be able to trust him.

Thanks again. I will do that for sure. Yes I have a good mechanic that will be looking at it sometime this week.
