The overdrive button works sometimes and sometimes it doesn't. I wondering if the button itself is going bad. If so, how do you get it out of the shift ****.
Does it end up staying in overdrive or regular? Do you tow or drive in alot of hills? If not and it stays in overdrive I wouldn't worry about it. you have to take off the steering wheel (airbag) and replace the shift lever.
The Transmission Control Switch (TCS) can be removed and tested by prying off the end cover and pulling the switch straight out of the shift lever. Check for continuity between the two pins when the switch is depressed.
Some more thoughts, if the CC switch checks out ok.
Maybe suspect the ABS speed sensor, if the speed-o is erratc, your having tranny shift problems, the ABS light is on, as all these systems including the cruise control, use the speed sensors output, so if it's output is corrupt, you may see operational hints in these other systems.
Rear brake stop light problems. If the rear brake lights aren't right, it'll cause the cruise control to not set, or dis-engage.
Edit: Check the CC deactivation switch on the brake master cylinder. If it's wet, or moist with brake fluid around the electrical connections insulator, disconnect it & tape the connector up.
Then check your VIN# & see if your on the 05S28 recall list, to add a fused power lead & or replace a leaking switch. The troubled switches have a reddish colored insulator, the redesigned switches have a black colored insulator.

Reason: add additional problem thought
Check the wiring in the shift level for broken wiring.pull the steering column shrouds
off,and check for broken wires where it comes out of the shaft.if it is broken you
will have to replace the lever.to replace the lever, just pull the pivot pin and the
gear shift lever will come out.The switch is a momentary contact, you have to check
continuity of the switch with the button pressed down.
Then check your VIN# & see if your on the 05S28 recall list, to add a fused power lead & or replace a leaking switch. The troubled switches have a reddish colored insulator, the redesigned switches have a black colored insulator.
Please verify that. I think you have the switch colors reversed. My dad has a 1994 F150 with the black switch that burst, and my 1998 F150 has the red that I was told by the dealer that is the replacement switch.
Well the Dealer should know which one is the redesigned switch, point is, no matter which switch we have, if it's leaking brake fluid, it needs to be replaced.
On the insulators color, that came from a site over a year old thats apparently not up now. The only currnt one I could find with after fire pictures, were red colored insulator switches!!!! So maybe the old site was right after all????!!!!
I remember after reading the insulator color part, checking my 94 Taurus & 99 Ranger & both of them have the red insulator switch, so I disconected their CC then. I just got my 05S28 Ranger recall letter this week.
My origional thought was maybe if the switch were defective, it belonged on dlynn's CC probem suspect list.
Hey guys..I really appreciate all the responses! I've been scratching my head as to the next move.
Everything else is working okay. I just have to "search" by moving the shift lever around and pushing the botton until the OD is disengaged. I can't always turn it back on by pushing the button again but it does reset when I kill the engine.
Looks like you have a broken wire in the shifter or column.Ive had more broken wires at the base of the shifter than switch failures. What makes me come to that conclusion is you have to wiggle the shifter around to search for contact.
