I'm looking at used PSDs and was wondernig about possible tuner damage.
If not managed properly, would a tuner cause slow gradual damage to the engine or would the damage be a quick catastrophic failure? Are there any signs of possible damage?
I'm not worried about potential damage to the trans as I will budget for a new trans at some point anyway.
well to be sure you would have to get oil analised, and have somone run AE to see how its doing,
how long was the tuner installed, what year, milage, more details, woul get you more answers
but in general bad maintenance would cause irreversable damage , no matter if it had tuner or it didnt
Hey, welcome to the site. As long as you have gauges installed to monitor the truck, there is a possibility for 'no' adverse affects from using a tuner. Most people who don't know just load on their superchip, bully dog, edge, etc and romp away at the pedal and can't monitor vital engine temps. Another factor is the transmission. When adding power it becomes the weak link, however if driven carefully you can wring out alot of life on a stock transmission.
the truck is a 2001 w/110k and excellent maintenance. All oil changes, filters, etc.
I think the tuner has been in for about 3 years. Trucked only towed a fishing boat, but there are a few hills in the area.
From what I read the main thing one could do wrong is let the exhaust temp get too high. What kind of engine damage would a mis-manged tuner normally cause?

Depends on what kind of tuner was installed, bully, super, diablo, etc are probably not going to be as hard on the truck as a "hot tune" , They are middle of the road tuners. I have had the bully dog (of some sort) for going on 5 years and 145K (I drove mine stock till it reached 100K) i am on 246K miles on the original tranny. Respect it, and it will respect you. have fun, but do not abuse it.
Since you are worried about the tranny, 01's had a nasty little thing called a mechanical diode in the tranny. some lasted 100K some went out 30K. get an OASIS report on this truck (from the Ford Dealer) and check to see if the diode has gone out and been replaced. No, it is not a driveway job.

You can melt a piston from too much heat. Joe "CSIPSD" is a forum member here and has a nice picture of a melted piston from one of his trucks. He uses it as a cup holder now.
