Has anyone had any luck increasing the MPG on the 04 5.4? I just got the truck a few weeks ago and boy does it suck gas. Its stock so was wondering about cold air intake, chip or exhaust. I would rather leave it stock but if I can get a few more MPG I will change.
i have a cat back and there is no difference....what kinad mileage are you getting now?...i usually get around 12.5 on asverage around town...what gears do you have...larger tires? i gain around 2mpg when im easy on the gas...when i drive it hard i can get near single digits...serioulsy save you money on the intake, exhaust and chip, which could run you near 1000 bucks and throw it in your gas tank...for me thats 10 weeks of gas...drive the truck like there is an egg under the go pedal...try and keep the rpms below 2000....the key i realized is the start...itll **** you off how slow you have to go off the start but your mpg will increase dramitically...hope i helped....
I haven't figured it out on paper but the overhead comp said 11.4mpg around town. I am going to take it on a 500 mile round trip and check how it does then. After seeing the mileage I am getting kinda makes me wish I got the deisel.
Nothing you do will get you a "few" more mpg. You might gain one or two by doing any or all of the mods, but unless you have money to burn, it's really not going to be worth it. I can get nearly 16.5 on the highway, but average more around 14.5 - 15. I don't even concern myself with "city" driving mpg (I have a straight freeway shot to work with occassional traffic jams). Just keep pullin' your wallet out often and enjoy the truck!
I had a '99 Expedition with the 4.6 and got at most 14mpg highway 10mpg city. I got rid of the 15/16 lbs. manual clutch fan and replaced it with dual electric fans, cut the factory "y" out of the exhaust and went with a flowmaster cat back and installed Bosch platnium +4 plugs. After those mods nevere got worse then 16mpg hwy 12mpg city and had some trips that would avg. 18-21 mpg. I think the best thing I ever did was the electric fans. Huge mpg gain and very noticable power gain. Drove like a different truck.
