Vehicle starts readily and runs smoothly when the engine is cold. After the engine warms up it stalls and refuses to start. When this happens the engine cranks normally but will not fire. If I wait patiently for anywhere from 1/2 hour to overnight it will start then stall again.
When it stalls, I have no spark from the ignition coil. So far I have replaced the TFI ignition module and the ignition coil. Any suggestions?
I was able to replace the TFI w/o pulling the distributor. I'm afraid that replacing the pickup coil may be my next chore. This is a 2.9l V6. Just looking at it, I don't see how to remove the dist without pulling the upper intake. UGH! Let me know if I'm wrong.
Unfortunately, no codes are being set. BTW, I tried to "simulate" the problem by pulling the fuel pump relay while the engine was running. After a few seconds it would start to stumble, then finally die - just what you would expect. When I get the actual failure it dies immediately, no stumbling. That's why I suspect an electrical problem. I have tried wiggling the ignition switch but no luck there.
I just recently replaced the dist. cap and rotor and then another rotor on my 2.9 V-6 BII. Pull off all plug wires (coil wire also) then undo the screws on each side and tilt the cap to the side as you lift it up. It takes some working it around but it was not as dificult as the oil filter in my '97 Contour.
John, To get to the pickup coil I would have to pull the dist, chuck it up in a vise and remove the gear on the lower end of the shaft. Not for the faint hearted.
Ya sure want to check everything closely, but it sounds like the coil in the dist to me. There is a hold down bolt in the base, loosen it to remove the distributor. I used the Haynes manual to replace mine, and yes it is a little work, but nothing crazy. You will need a timing light, and some experience in using one. Sure beats being found on the road dead.
There is a roll pin holding the gear to the dist shaft that needs to be removed to release the base plate. And getting the dist gear to align with the cam gear was a little touchy, but not bad. Get a manual and you should be fine.
