I just bought a 1990 Bronco II with a junk A4LD tranmission and the electric transfer case. I have several Mitsu 5 speeds and manual transfer cases that I would like to swap in. Is there any glaring issues I will need to address?
The trans and transfer cases I have range from 1985 to 1988. I have pedals, slave cylinder, drive shafts, and plenty of beer. My concern is computer. I know the A4ld was somewhat computer controlled. Now, the computer will not see the converter or shift solonoid. Will it trigger the light? I will have to emmision test. If they see a light, it is automatic FAIL. I guess I could put in a manual ECM, but only if I have to.
I don't think I can drink enough to answer that one. But I was thinking the computers that's in the BII's didn't really read anything off the trannys. Not sure. I did swap out a Mitts 5 speed in mine for a C-5 and it didn't throw any codes. But I'm not sure if Timing Curves and Fuel curves are different between an auto and a stick.
Good point.....I did not think of fuel curve. I know timing is different between the two. If I recall, The the computers were kind of "dumb" and it took just short of a nucular reaction to trigger the light.
I am doing the swap this weekend.....I'll keep you posted
A '90 A4LD will have a computer controlled 3-4 shift and torque converter lockup clutch. If the computer doesn't see those solenoids, it could throw a check engine light. The EEC-0IV computer isn't that smart though. It only needs to see a complete circuit. Others that I know of that have done this swap have simply wired in a cheap resistor (if you're keeping the old A4LD as a paper weight, you might just pull the solenoids out and plug them in) so the computer thinks those circuits are complete.
