Another ABS Light Question

I have a 2000 F-150. The ABS light is on now for the past 3 months. The truck just sits in the garage though. I was thinking about replacing the abs sensor on the top of the diff. My ranger also needs a new one. Where are some places to check on it for broke wires, etc. This truck is barely used so I doubt that something is broke. I figure it is a bad abs sensor. Is there anyplace that will check the computer for free? There is no way I am going to go to the local dealership and pay them the $142 that they want.

You can pull the ABS codes yourself. On my 99, I removed the right kick panel to get at the trigger lead. Ground it, turn key on and count the flashes of the ABS lamp. There is a procedure and list of codes in the forums here somewhere. Mine was the diff. sensor, and changing it out was a snap.

First off, 2 wheel ABS or 4 Wheel ABS?

If 4 wheel, the front ABS Sensors are fairly easy to change, as is the diff sensor. For the front ones, just be sure to get a longer screw to hiold the new sensor in place, thick plastic vs thin metal flange, and of the correct size, as it is metric threads.

Check out ROCK AUTO for the sensors, Ford brand much cheaper.

it would be cheaper to replace the rear speed sensor (on top of the diff) as it is under $20 and all shops will want around $50 to scan it i would take my chances. Oh and btw the sensor is under $20 at the DEALERSHIP and also the only place i have been able to find them.
