Clicking When On Start

Everytime I go to start my truck in the morning it seems to make a clicking noise under the hood for about 15 secs. Then if I go to shut it off once it is warmed up and start it up again. It wont do it. It is like a quick clicking sound. I tried to figure it out but couldnt so.

it starts. but while it is running it does the clicking. if it was doing it instead of starting i would know it is the starter or dead battery

Is the sound coming from inside the cab under the dash, or from outside the vehicle?

If it's from under the dash, it's probably a relay switch that could have a bad ground.

I'm fighting something similar to this in my truck, and I think I have it narrowed down to my Vehicle Security Module (VSM), which is what was put in the 2002 and up models as a replacement for the General Electronic Module (GEM).

Listen closely to your exhaust manifolds.

These gasoline engines have had a problem with manifold studs, and yours may be starting to warp. It could sound like a ticking, clicking, valve tapping. And when the engine heats up, the surfaces could expand enough to seal things up more.

Just another thing to check.

doesnt seem to be comming from there. I do have an exhaust manifold leak that I havent taken care of yet. but the sound doesnt appear to be comming from there.

I'm sure that you're right.

Just FYI, both of my 2002 5.4L exhaust manifolds had to be replaced (at different times) because of the stud situation (in addition to the engine spitting a plug). When the second manifold started to go, it sounded just like a valve tap that would go away upon warm up, until it got worse. And I swore the sound was coming from the throttle body on top of the engine, not the ex manifold.

Good luck.

my '03 F150 (4.6L) makes the same noise and doesnt do it again all day once warm. Even when I come out after work with the truck not being started all day, it cranks with no noise. only in the mornings. taps for about 5 min. Cant figure it out. Makes me wonder and with the spark plug issue, I have thought about going and trading it in for another truck (or problem). I love my truck but I sure dont wanna have trouble with the motor. Seems like it just started doing it recently.
