Ticking/Clicking when passing

I have a 1998 3.0 ranger. I've developed a ticking/clicking when I go to pass someone. The ticking/clicking will start soon after I down shift to begin a pass. It will tick/click while passing and then go away, almost as if the fuel pump was caught by surprise and then had to catch up, and did. Any thoughts?

sounds like an exhaust leak echoing off the cars you pass

Thanks Psycho.... but I dont think so as it sounds like its coming from the the middle of the truck just on the other side of the firewall
