I just finished a 700 mile highway run over Thanksgiving in my 2002 V-10 2WD CC and thought that I'd post a mileage report. The truck had a couple of hundred pounds of luggage, etc., and about 475 pounds of people in it. On the way there, I ran the truck pretty hard (~ 85 mph), and averaged a little under 14 mpg. On the way back, I ran near the speed limit, and got 16.5 mpg! The truck now has just over 2000 miles on it.
WOW! I also have a v-10 f350 dually. I took a trip from Baton Rouge to dallas, Approx 900-1000miles round trip. I am also happy to report
14 mi to the gallon @80mph. I also tried something with the tires.
I lowered the air pr. to 35psi. MUCH BETTER RIDE and still 14mpg!
Most people I've talked to who complain of really bad gase mileage have two or more of the following:
4WD, lift kit, big tires, 4.30 rear, lead foot.
I have a friend who tried to convince me not to buy an SD because the gas mileage on his '99 V-10 sucked (8-9 mpg city OR highway!). I was concerned because his truck was nearly identical to the configuration that I wanted. Then I rode with him. He slammed the right pedal to the floor leaving every light, and drove 90+ mph on the highway.
That seems like great mpg! I have a 2001 F-350 CC 4X4 SRW V-10 auto 3.73 with 3000 miles. I have been keeping perfect gas records and the best I have seen is 12 -13 mpg. I have a light foot and on the freeway drive at fastest - 70 mph. Engine is at 2000 rpm at 70 mph on freeway. Is this the rpm others see at this speed? At this speed mpg is 12.5 Around town it's 10.5 to 12. The best tank I have so far was 12.89. I have had a tank or two in the 9 - 10 range, but those tanks included some towing at slow speeds off road and in pastures, so I don't worry about those.
If people are figuring their mpg accurately, there does seem to be a good varience between trucks with the same configuration.
It would be interesting if a large number of v-10 owners posted their mpg here to really get a better idea of what we should expect from these trucks. I feel I am getting about what I expected when I bought the truck. I bought it for all the things it can do, but good mpg is the trade off for those things. I love this truck so far. I have pulled some good size loads up some big hills (highway, offroad, dirt roads)and it barely knows the trailer is back there. It does seem to shift a little funny at times, but I have never had an automatic before, so I may not really be the best judge of that. With the 4 studded snow tires, I have been on back roads and freeways with ice and snow and it handles almost like the road is dry.
My '02 F-350 SRW SC 4x4 longbed with 4.30 gears gets about 10 all the time. I have seen it as low as 8 but that was pulling a heavy load through hills as fast as it would go. The best I've had was 14 and that was on the highway with cruise set at 65. What I like is that it hardly makes a difference how I drive, the mileage barely changes.
I have never gotten any better that 9.6.....Truck has 69,000 miles, and run's great, just a gas hog....I haven't gone on a trip yet though, and my driving consists of small town driving.....Go to work - one mile go home - one mile....go to wal- mart - 2 miles....go hunting - 5 miles...I guess that would have something to do with it....It is a 4X4 CC SD 4.3 gears....
I have a 2001 crew cab, single rear wheels, short bed, 2wd, V10 with a 5 speed manual. City driving it runs right around 13.5 MPG. Highway is usually 15.5 - 16 at 70-75 MPH. One trip I was forced to run 500 miles at 50 MPH and it did 18 MPG!
I've got a 99 F350 V10/auto, ext.cab/8ft bed, 4X4 with 3.73 gears. My mileage is averaging 11.5-12mpg around town and around 14 hiway, driving 75-80. I really like this truck and I think the mileage is acceptable considering the size and weight!Comparing it to other trucks I've had with big engines this one is by far the best and most fun to drive. I have been getting @13.5 commuting. Around 16 on the highway.
The best I have gotten is 18.5 for @ 150 mile stretch. 65Mph, 20mph tail wind no AC, going south in the flatland.

I figured I'd add on to my earlier mileage report with some more
interesting figures.
I just drove 130 miles at 50 mph (on the Natchez Trace Parkway, where the speed limit is 50 mph, and the enforcement is with federal police) with about the same people and stuff as in the post above. At the end of the trip, I checked the trip computer and it read 18.5 mpg!
