i'm new to the game here, but you guys are amazing me with these figures. i own a 99 supercab long bed with 130,000 miles. i very seldom go under 100 miles a day, mostly being around the farm and average about 11 mpg. the best i've gotten was on a trip from lubock,tx to natchitoches,la and i averaged 18. the worst i have experiened was with a 13,500# load of hay going from lubbock to weatherford,tx and that got me about 6.5 running 60 mph. the only problems i have run into with this hauler was a burned out speed sensor in the rear end and a new tranny at 120,000. i installed a k&n fipk and aftermarket dual exhaust and noticed little variance. what are some other things that yall can suggest to help me increse the over all power and not my pocket book. i was thinking about a 4.30 rear end for the pulling power. i was wondering about a super charger in addition to other possible accesories but am still looking for more info. thanks a bunch!!
That sounds about right. Mine get's 6.5 with 13,500 so all
together at around 70. I wonder how many mpg the steeper
gears cost you. Mine are 4.6 something - 4.61 maybe? You
wanna get some get up and go, put the motorhome gear in.

OK, you've made me do it. I pulled the log for the SD and calculated the gas mileage:
20 340 miles, average mpg = 14.06.
Both my wife and I are afflicted with PbF (lead foot), and don't baby the truck. We are *very* pleased with the mileage, given the size and carrying capacity of the beast.
Best mileage to date: 16.77 mpg from Los Alamos, NM to Walsenburg, CO over LaVeta pass, about 2500# in the bed, mostly with a quartering tailwind, running 50-80 mph!
Worst: 11.2 from Grants NM to Flagstaff, AZ, unloaded into ~30 mph headwind at 75-80 mph.
Fuel consumption was *not* a major consideration when we bought the truck--and it shouldn't be, if you really need the capacity of such a monster.
I'm new here so be gentle. 02 supercab 4x4 6 speed long bed. Dont know the gear ratio but I can tell they must be high. This truck is a PIG!
9.6 to 12.8. No power to speak of and the mileage sucks. Shoulda kept the 00 diesel.
Any help out there for power and mileage? Mileage first. Oh, 10500 miles on it and mostly freeway.
Thanks

NO power to speak of ? Ya got sumthin wrong somewhere amigo. Unless you drive Funny cars on the weekend and are comparing the V-10 to that. Heck my 98 265 hp V-10 will surprise the snot out of me if I stand on it at about 25 MPH and she kicks down into 1st. You may have something the dealer needs to look at. Cause 'no power' aint something you hear out of many V-10 owners. Ken 98 E-350 XLT 15 pass V-10 E4OD.

The tank of fuel before this last one my 02,Reg.cab.6spd.,3.73 axle, with 3000mi.averaged 13.86mpg. in mixed driving.I didn't drive real conservatively either.I have power but the truck is a bit heavy compared to my 96.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 19-Jun-02 AT 00:00 AM (EST)]because I thought it would get better mileage. Not so. I just got it back from the dealer cause the air went out already and it's 110 here. They checked everything out and said its fine. Fine, if you like driving a slug!! The wifes Saturn 4 banger will rip this slug a new a$$ everytime.
Nine more months and this pig is history.I will not be driving another V10
02 Supercab V5 6 speed nemed the PIG.
PS: I'm glad to hear that most if not all you guys are happy with yours.

I DO know what you're talking about. My brother in law has 4 V-10 Ford pick-ups in various cab configurations for his electrical contracting business. He loves his V-10's but one truck in particular, the 2001 SC 4X4 V-10 Auto he says has NO power. And I drove it last night after reading your post. I tell ya what, my 98 V-10 would SMOKE that thing. It felt like the engine was straining to get the truck to go. He's got 4:10 gears while I have 3:73, but there's a HUGE difference in that truck and my van as far as power and seat of the pants feel. His other 3 V-10's are more like my V-10 except he's gotta haul around all the 4X4 stuff. But even so, that 2001 just feels doggy and lethargic. It takes lots of pedal to get her moving, it really feels like maybe the exhaust pipe is 1/2" total, he too has had his in the shop. I wonder though, I would bet that this truck and your truck have some sort of exhaust restriction. The more I think about it the more convinced I am of it. I'll talk to him and get back to you. You may want to try the same, I got $1 that says you find a problem. Ken 1998 E-350 XLT 15 pass V-10 E4OD 3.73.
ken04,
Thanks for the re. I am runnng the stock exhaust. I even tried one of those cyclone things. nada. If you happen to find a known problem I would appreciate a heads up. This thing just seems to have high gears and no power. It has a speed limiter @ 96 mph and I can do that in 3rd gear alto it takes forever to get there. What to do?

The Cyclone things are bogus, they do nothing except use up a good $50 bill. There's alot of guys here who have said how restrictive the Y-pipe is. I guess Ford choked down the Y-pipe to cure the 'flutter' which was a problem on some of the V-10's. I quick inspection may be very revealing. I can't imagine that it could be too hard on a new truck to pull that Y-pipe off and give it a good look. Maybe have your local, friendly muffler shop yank it and look at it. I'd think that they could even make you a new one as some other guys here have done. Or maybe it's farther back in the exhaust system. You definitely are not getting the power that all us guys here enjoy. My 98 with the 265 horse motor (yea it's 10 less than the 98 pick-up due to the airbox, so it IS possible to lose plenty of ponies in the intake/outlet systems) is a rocket ship. I'm not kiddin ya, it surprises me sometimes when I nail it at 25-35 MPH and it kicks into 1st. It goes like a S-A/APE. But my brother in laws seemed really lethargic, like it had really tall gears and had a sock in the exhaust pipe. I'd surely get it checked out. You can't rely on your Ford dealer unfortunately. They'll plug it into the computer and if all the parameters are normal they'll charge you $100 and kick you out the door. You'll need to do a little detective work but I'll just about promise that the results will be worth your while, Ken
