No throttle response!!

I have a 96 powerstroke f 250, I started it today and had plans to drive to my farm. The truck started as usual and idled as usual but when I went to press accelerator there was no response in the engine.I would say after about 5 mins , everything was ok and back to working.........Any ideas on what caused this?.......Thanks

do you mean that when you pushed the petal absolutely nothing happened? i would guess the electronics on the throttle petal is trying to go bad or maybe the fpr screen is totally full of gunk then after enough fuel had past through some of the mess past on.

I would say it is one of two things. First I would say TPS. Disconnect and clean the connections and the whole thing in general if dirty. Try wiggling it if it does it again. Second it may be the CPS. $15-$25 is a cheap way to eliminate it.

Oh I noticed you are new. Welcome and keep us posted we will fix it together.

TPS= throttle position sensor
CPS= cam position sensor

Look here and get one for a spare they tend to go bad often.

Do a seach on my threads and read the one titled "Bad CPS" I had the same problem and turned out to be the small switch at the throttle pedal........ That little 10 dollar switch is big bucks at the dealer.........

Jaaaaaaackman I assume you got it fixed. Congrats.

Also when you clean the terminals be sure to use contact cleaner it should work better. I still believe it is TPS

Neal , no I did not actully fix the problem yet. What I did was take the suspected bad switch out and swapped it with the switch in my other truck (97 F-250) which confirmed for me that the switch is indeed bad. I am going to buy that aersol spray that computer techs use to clean keyboards and such and see if that frees it up.

Oh I see. Good luck on that one. It may help but electronic contacts can be elusive and they tend to wear and react strange whenever they want. Hopefully that will work for you. I had to wiggle my switch once to fix it. Hmmm easy fix huh? Althogh temporary.

I hear ya Neal, its temporary even if the spray cleaner works at some point it most likely will start to stick again........ I normally fix things the right way but the price for a throttle pedal assyembly is totally ridiculious.........anyway 12AM here I am turnin in Goodnight

Try... This....

Or this...

Or this test....

You need to put a voltmeter across the GY/W and the GY/R wires on the connector to the TPS. With the key on, watch the voltage across the range of the throttle to see if there is any flat spots. You should see no less than .37 volts at idle position and no more than 4.5 volts at full throttle. The the third wire, (BRN/W), is the ref. voltage and should be 5 volts all the time.

Thanks ill keep for future refrances.... My trouble spot is the IVS and its a friction problem not electrical, the little white plunger that goes thru the redish boot is getting hung up on the boot sending the truck to an idle mode. Trouble probley caused by not cleaning the truck interior enough , the switch was covered with a coating of dust bottom line there is too much dust kickin around on the floor..........

My 95 does this same thing, has for several yrs. After starting the truck "sometimes" the fuel pedal does not do its job (same problem as described above). What I learned is quickly pumping the fuel pedal several times returns the fuel pedal to normal. I have not be able to pin point the problem since it is an intermittent problem. I have read this same problem in this forum. I would suspect most of these being the same.
