New here and new to the diesel scene. Seen a lot of good information on here thought I'd ask some questions and get some advice.

First off here recently last few days the coolant tank has been empty. Just kind of all of a sudden with no visible leaks, no smoking no over heating anything like that. Coolant temp usually runs about 180 oil temp usually 10 to 12 higher.. Any ideas of where the coolant is going? Dip stick isn't milky

Second concern is when I got home from work last night engine running I opened the hood to see if the tank still had coolant or not, and it did and usually does until it cools, but on passenger side it is making a ticking noise sounds to be more up top towards front of engine but it will tick tick tick and stop and start can't hear it inside or not real noticeable with hood closed

And lastly for now when I pulled the dip stick out(warm engine and that maybe why) the oil seemed thinner than it should be and again maybe because it was hot

Thanks in advance for responses

Do you have any Gauges to Monitor the EOT ( engine oil temp) vs ECT ( engine coolant temp) ? the dash gauges wont tell you until it's too late, first I would check cold fluid and where it sits in the degus, how close to min line? you may just be low and that could be why temps are spread. secondly if the EGR is ready to poot out ,park the truck nose down hill and pull the EGR Valve, if the EGR is leaking you will find coolant down in the port. Diesels run hot along with a smoking Turbo on top your oil will be a little thin, what weight oil you running? a 5w-40 synthetic is what most of us use and or delo, Valvoline.
on the ticking sound are you sure it's from the top ? the HFCM fuel pump makes a sound similar , so maybe Carefully place a pipe to the ear would help inspect the noise. the HFCM is under the drivers door on the frame rail

I have the ect livewire that displays the eot and ect temps. The coolant in the degas bottle for the first month I had it stayed on the max line(on the sticker that says ignore markings on bottle) than all of a sudden it was empty just in a matter of a couple days . Last few days it's been staying full though my temps have been Brett broad last few days it's been hot out but usually afternoon on the way to work 1430 it's usually about 7 8 degrees difference oil hotter, and on the way home 0300 bout 70 degrees the coolant stays 175-180 and oil temps are 190-195most I've seen is 21 degrees difference on the trip home when the weather is cooler out for oil I've only had the truck since June 30th the dealer said they were going to change it when I bought it, if they did or not you know how that goes but they did put a new sticker. I've seen posts to use 15w 40 and the ticking sounds to be under valve cover on passenger side but not steady it ticks 3 or 4 times and stops for a few seconds..

Just let it sit 12 hrs and look at ECT and EOT and they should only be a degree or 2 apart if any.

You can rule out bias sensors this way.

This is correct, by looking at the temps your running too cool for coolant , should be 190 plus a little more anything below 188 would be low temp ,oil will be hotter by 6/7 deg at wot 65 mph flat road.

Does any of these symptoms make you guys believe the oil cooler or egr valve or egr cooler is on the way bad? I'm going to take the egr valve out tomorrow and hopefully find no liquid in their. Truck has 148k miles what's the life span usually run on them.

Over 15 degree difference on ECT and EOT normally warrants a new oil cooler.
Park nose down over night then pull the egr valve and look for wetness.

Ok I will try that is their any other test to do for checking them out? The other morning 3am headed home it was raining and I got the highest temps I've ever got on the truck. Eot was running 12-21 over ect which was ranging from 172-180 and oil hotter but last couple days it's staying rite about 12 degrees difference. Occasionally the oil will go up to about 17 degrees higher.. If the cooler goes out would I have any coolant oil exchanges? Anything like that

Oil cooler ruptures are far less common than ones that are just clogged.
The test of the oil cooler is driving at 65 mph or 1800 RPMs with a warm engine for about 15 to 20 minutes. If you are over a 15 degree delta the oil cooler should be replaced.

But like 04badford said, 180 degree coolant Temps are to cold. I would change the t Stat before doing the oil cooler test.

Kk. I'm waiting for a coolant filter to get her to flush but the coolant has almost no color to it. I've had it about a month and a half and been wondering if their is more water than coolant. Would that have any effect on the temp differences of it wasn't a good blend of coolant? Something else it's been doing and I've heard this could be signs of a Tstat problem if you take off pretty quick the a/c blows hot and eventually blows cold again but haven't really seen a lot about that problem any thoughts on this?

I would prioritize the t-stat before digging into the oil cooler. Low coolant temps will lead to a higher delta by default. Those who run the 200f mishimoto t-stat report lower deltas, but this is purely because of the hotter coolant. My t-stat is also going out and i am noticing higher deltas, due to that. I normally run about a 6-7 degree difference, but when my coolant is only 182-184f, my temp difference is 10-13 degrees different. Installing my new thermostat tomorrow. I got a duralast from autozone, so we'll see how that works out. For $20, it's worth a shot, but i have low expectations for it. When it craps out, I'll get the mishimoto t-stat.

In my experience, the oil likes to be 198-200f unloaded and about 210f while towing on flat ground.
