96 Explorer Jumpy Temperature Gauge

96 Explorer Jumpy Temperature Gauge

The temperature gauge on my 96 Explorer keeps jumping around. It will start to warm up and then drop to cold as if the engine is off. It jumps like it is a mexican jumping bean. Any suggestions about what is wrong would be greatly appreciated.

look for a loose connection at the sender

Loose or corroded connection at the sender. Could also be a bubble in the coolant or a bad ECT sensor.
