2004 Explorer Limited 4X4 6 cyl with oil cooler and rear A/C
Every morning when it is cold (60 degrees in Phoenix) the temperature gauge shows normal temperatures, but cool air comes from the floor vents. Within 4 miles the "low oil/high temp" light comes, then about 15 seconds later the temperature gauge goes to hot. Within another 15 seconds the temperature gauge drops and warm air starts coming out of the floor vent.
Any ideas what is wrong?
I had all the heater hoses replaced in December and on the way home the same thing happened. The dealership said it was air in the system. The problem didn't recur until a couple of weeks ago it happened once, and the last couple of days it has happened every morning.
yes, you are low on fluid. refill, mark and run for a week or month and see if the level is dropping. maybe you are just low, maybe you have a small internal water leak and using antifreeze ?
Typical of low coolant level, check cold and fill.
NOTE: It is not sufficient to top up the recovery tank, you must ensure the rad is full when cold. if it does not draw from the recovery tank you either have a leak or the rad cap is N/S..
I kept of log of the circumstances of the overheating--sometimes it overheats and sometimes it doesn't under the same conditions. However, once it overheats in the morning it is good for the rest of the day.
I took it to the dealer and the are typically stumped--can't duplicate the problem--off course they can't unless they drive it every day for a couple of weeks.
I tried something this morning and got it to overheat on command, so I will try it again tomorrow morning to see if I can consistently get it to overheat.
Going to work at 4:30 AM it was 75 degrees outside. I let the engine reach a normal temperature, and then I turned the heater to the maximum 90 degrees. Within a minute the temperature gauge showed hot and the heater put out cold air. It stayed hot until I turned the heater temperature back down.
this is very typical for a system that is low on antifreeze. i have also seen it do this with a sticky thermostat. i put a plastic TEE in my heater hose up high so i can flush the system, also use it to blead out air when filling the system with new coolant.
