Hey, Cook-
Did you notice a mileage hit with the ULDS? Mine dropped off by 1.5 MPG! I stay away from it now.
Peaceful days-
Being in the Repubik of Kalifornia how do you stay away from the ULSD? I would think that with all the EPA laws there it would be absolutely mandatory that that's the only diesel sold there, and I thought LSD was no longer being manufactured in the US. Why would they refine two kinds if they can't sell it here legally?

I dunno? There are stations that specifically mark the pumps ULSD and others that are simply marked #2 Diesel. The consistency of my purchases from any one of three preferred stations, all marked #2 diesel, all netting me 15.5'ish MPG... The first station that I purchased ULSD from--pump marked ULSD--was an Exxon station. That tank of fuel, same driving conditions, 14 MPG. The next several tanks full were from pumps marked #2 diesel, driving condition still unchanged, 15.5MPG. Later, had to buy fuel outside of my regular pattern, so I went to a Revco near my work and filled with ULSD and you guessed it, the MPG's dropped like a rock. I can't explain it, but that's the story.

There is no LSD in California. That's why most pumps are just marked "diesel." They don't need to tell you it's ULSD rather than LSD, because there is no LSD.

OK, I was just telling my story and the rest is just up for wild speculation. I'll admit; it's mysterious that the mileage differs the way it did. I'll just keep with what's been working for me.

I read an article comparing LSD to ULSD and the latter of the two has a lower BTU rating that the former, which explains the lower fuel economy.
My fuel mileage dropped as well after the mandated ULSD came to pass.
My experience with the 6.0 has been to use (find) good quality Diesel, otherwise the fuel economy is reduced by as much as ~30%.
Now that I can only purchase ULSD I tend to stay away from low cost stations becuase I'll end up paying more on average.
BTW I also don't prescribe to those elickser fuel additives; there IMO a waist of money. However, I'm researching this and I may conduct my own control tests to see if they're worth the added expense.

I've always been like you on additives, never had much use for them. When I got my first diesel back in May, the members here all seemed to preach about using a fuel treatment. So I bought some Power Service Diesel Kleen, fully expecting it to be a waste of money. I used 16 oz in about 30 gals. I immediately found that the motor was quieter when idling, inside and outside the cab. Much less clackety clack. I figure that can't be anything but good, so I continue to use that product. I cannot say if it saves it's own cost in fuel savings because I don't drive enough repetitive routes to do a meaningful comparison. I would say it is doubtful, even though Walmart has mandated the use of DK in it's OTR fleet because their studies show it saves fuel. They are pressured to be green and go to extreme lengths.
I figure my motor was designed to run LSD, and now I cannot buy that, so a fuel additive that adds some of the properties missing in ULSD is a good idea.

Thanks for the feedback.
Do they make an additive that will increase the engine noise level? I always like the clattering noise of a Diesel engine, especially when drivers pull up next to me, they have roll up their windows so that they can continue their cell phone converstaion while driving.
I've also notice that the amount of Diesel exhaust smoke has been reduced by using ULSD, which I've always enjoyed seeing the billow's of smoke permeate all those kind and friendly drivers that drive inches away from my rear bumper while flashing their headlights.

It's called an SCT... I don't know if you want to increase the clatter but smoke can be arranged
OK, heres my question. I have been running Bio the last 2 tanks and according to what I THINK I read it has more lubricity than regular fuel. Haven't driven it enough to notice any significant change but do I need to add the Power Service additive or am I OK w/o it? I guess it won't hurt to add it, but that $ will buy a couple extra gallons of fuel. Any thoughts? I will be adding the winter blend for the anti-gelling but do I need to add the summer additive?
