Well I tore into the turbo this morning due to shaft end movement and fond a damaged compressor wheel.Iordered oneto replace it but it wont be here till wed I assume. But still have a couple ?'s.1 does anybody have anexploded view of the turbo?2 when you pull the center section there is a thin metal (saucer?) I found its been worn through by the end movement so is this going to cause problems after its back together?3 where on earth do the snap rings that are in the rebuild kit go?Thanks in advance for the help.
The compressor wheel is destroyed, so that means the turbine section probably doesnt look too good as well. Do you have the turbine housing off? The thin C shaped part is the thrust bearing. It should not be worn. It is what prevents the shaft from moving axially (in and out) and prevents contact of the wheels with the housings. It has to go back in the turbo in a certain way to get oiling, make sure you get that correct. The snap rings are the seals which keep the oil inside the center section. Look on the shaft, there is a groove near the turine wheel, there is a snap ring that you remove, clean the groove and then carefully install a new one. There is another one for the compressor housing on the collar that the thrust bearing slides into. Take a look at my gallery by clicking on the picture and looking through the album.
Actually I got lucky and didnt get my ats housing destroyed.Had I let it go much longer it would have waste it.The turbine housing is off. Looking in your gallery @ pic 17 what is thepart obove the thrust bearing but rides below the the compressor backplate? Im assuming this is where the small snap ring goes. however i did not find snap rings when I pulled it apart.I also see where I belive the other snap ring goes for the exaust but did not find one there either.Soim assuming this is where the axial movement was coming from.
