Smile Newbe with turbo problems

Hi wonderful site lot of info here injoy very much. I consider myself a fair mechanic Ive rebuilt cat, John deere, cumming, detroit diesels. But Im new to the psd. I have a 97 F250 with 300000 miles still runs fine It started leaking oil at turbo looked like running off of pedistal behind turbo. I removed turbo and it looked like the o rings were good. dry between the turbo and pedistal but it was oily coming out of the actuator for the ebpv it was oil on the spring side of it. Is this common or not. also it would not leak idaling only with engine rev. some. also I notice oil in the clean air side of turbo wondering if seals are going bad. I filled oil galley with oil and presserised the oil with air and made it leak around shaft. Shaft has a slight movement side to side. Wondering what you guys think should I get it rebuilt considering milage. or what. and does anyone know of a rebuilder or where I can get parts except from factory.

the oil leak you have is fairly common. you may want to consider a new turbo. there are deisal injection places around that can rebuild the turbo, but find someone with good knowledge. also if your concidering a new turbo check your exaust for leaks so you can take full benifit of that new turbo. also check banks enginering for turbo upgrades if thats your cup of tea.

i am pretty sure the oil on the "clean air side" of the turbo is ok at least i have it on my truck and my truck is perfect. i believe it comes from that little tube that comes up from the valve cover. some sort of recirculation i believe. as far as the rest of the oil problem i cant help you there i dont know enough about psd's yet!! good luck

Oil on compressor side of turbo is coming from the CCV or an over oiled filter.
Oil out of the pedestal (EBPV) actuator arm is probbaly a leaking plunger seal inside of the pedestal. I believe you can get a actuator plunger rebuild kit which includes a new seal.
Side to side play on the turbo shaft is not good. Little or no play on the shaft side play is acceptable.

Thanks alot guys. The side to side movement if I had to guess is approx 1 or 2 thousands just barely enough to see it move. But, when I pressurized the oil passage with a air hose a couple drops of oil run out from behind the turbine. Just wondering if that would indicate a problem.

Banks only sells turbo housings, the only turbo upgrade for that year powerstroke is either a ball bearing retrofit or the H2E from hypermax, niether one is worth the money on a truck with that many miles.

If you're seeing oil on the exhaust side of the turbo, you have a seal issue.
Need a rebuild or a new one.
