The 4R100 is an interesting beast.
It will fail, its just a matter of when.
I know one that failed routinely every 1600miles. (thats not a misprint)
I know others that have gone 300kmiles without a rebuild.
One thing is for sure - the Las Vegas heat that DOHC has to deal with wouldn't help the transmission... but having said that, its no real excuse for failure.
Then maybe it's time for a big plate-type aftermarket trans cooler and a trans fluid temp gauge? I've always had good experiences with the 4R100, and IMO it is the best behaved Ford 4-speed automatic trans.
The 4R100s have their share of problems, but they usually have pretty high demands placed on them. For better of worse, the Powerstrokes (and even the PI V10s) are pretty damn close to their service limit. The Allisons and Torqueshifts also have their fair share of problems when really worked.
If interested, the aftermarket (Level 10 and Lentech) have the solution to whatever 4R100 issue you may have. The 4R100 can be made pretty damn close to indestructable if you have the desire.
Soft shifts kill transmissions, that's the number one reason these trannies fail. An aftermarket shift programmer that firms it up will make the tranny last longer.

It is the best 4 speed Ford Auto, however thats not saying much unfortunately...

The Allison yes. The Torqshift seems a pretty darn stout transmission... even those guys with hi-po PSD's seem to make little modifications.

Yeah, they can. VERY STOUT.
The 4R100 has a very strong basic construction... just things like cooling (in our climate), pressures and solenoids aren't set up 100%.
Jared makes a pretty valid point too....

What's kind of interesting is that the first trans may have been worked.....did much more boating and such......towed an 8,000 pound travel trailer a little bit to the homesite. (see below)
The last 3 years have been fairly ez on her.....we started building a house in '03 and haven't taken the boat out in a long while. Have taken the Sea Doos out maybe a dozen times....we're talking MAYBE 2500 pounds.
Towed my tractor from San Diego (300 miles at 7,000 pounds) but that was well out of the summer heat.......oh, and I towed a 10,000# excavator (with trailer) about 100 miles in December.
So while I agree a bigger cooler would be helpful, I don't think this truck has worked very hard and should be able to stay together when used within its design limits.
Glad to hear you got the situation resolved. Frankly, I am rather surprised...
Thank you, and while I'm incredibly grateful to Galpin Ford (another shameless plug ) I don't think a long time Ford owner should have had to jump through so many hoops.
