Anyone know the list number for the 4180 used on the 1979
460's? Did they put the ford part number on the carb body,
or on a tag? I'll be looking for one at swap meets and I doubt
I'll find any that still have their tags left. Thanks.
The Ford part number will be stamped into the choke horn on the front right side. You will be looking for something like a D9TE- number. I thought 79's used a 4160 though.
Not good for performance, the mixture screws are in the baseplate behind some plugs that must be drilled out. I believe there are actually 4 mixture screws. 2 for the rear as well.At least the one I had off of a 85 Mustang GT did.
Are you doing a restore? Why would you want a 4180 over a 4160?
Cheaper, and it's going on a 76 460 in a Grand Marquis to replace the 4350. If it's off a 460, it'll already be calibrated for that application. The 76 is stock, no modifications. On a $400 car, I'm not spending $300 for a new one. Oh' and I know I'll need the adapter.
Yeah, make sure you get long studs because the 4180 and 4350 have the same bolt pattern unlike a Q-Jet which uses the smaller pattern so the studs will have to go thru the egr plate, adapter plate and carb from the intake.
Well, at the Arlington TX swap meet yesterday, I bought
a Holley List No. 80457-2 carb complete with all the proper
linkage for $10. Looks like I'll use it instead of the 4180 I
was looking for. Cheap enough. The date code was 2158,
which I'm assuming is 1998. I don't think they had the
-2 model out in 1988. I could be wrong. All the linkage
moved properly and there was a solid and steady rush of
air from the accel. pump holes, so I think I did OK. What
do you 'all think?
I have one on a 460. It runs fine. I also had it on a 351W for awhile until I swapped carbs between the two trucks because I'm going to be keeping the 63 and wanted my 750 Edelbrock. For $10, as long as it isn't cracked and leaks, you got a great deal.
I have a 4180 I just bought from a carb shop for $75. I don't like it and would sell it fo what I paid. It came off a 460 and comes with the adapter for a spread bore manifold. It was freshly rebuilt and has about 10 minutes of run time on it from me.
