A few years ago, an V-10 F250 was brought in to have a few "adjustments" made on a utility body. At startup, it sounded normal. However, when you give it a little gas, it roars. A look underneath revealed a straight-pipe instead of a muffler, catalytic converter intact.
Now, I know these mufflers weigh a ton, and are restrictive as you can get. Is anybody else running this? I'd like to try it with mine, but since that mufflers' so heavy (meaning its gotta do SOMETHING), is the emissions system affected by this? Since the cat is there, it's not really too noticeable at idle. Or will I just be viewed as a hayseed?
I'm tired, and this post may not make much sense. Please re-read it if you have to.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 17-Sep-02 AT 09:41 PM (EST)]Muffler?? We don't need no stinkin muffler! The muffler will not effect emissions. Straight pipe it if you like. You may also want to look into an aftermarket muffler. It will be loud. The V10 will not have a V8 rumble, more like an Indy car.
Oh yeah, it's gona sound good without a muffler; but heed this warning: you will notice the loss of a little low end torque. Sure, you'll make up for it past 3000 rpm, but if you're prone to towing really heavy stuff, perhaps an aftermarket muffler is the way to go.

I had the straight pipe installed in place of my muffler several months ago. It took some getting used to but I like it. I just had the truck IM'd about a month ago and it passed with flying colors. I haven't noticed any torque problems pulling a 12,000lb fifth wheel, if anything it amazes the hell out of me that my truck pulls it so easily. The trailer stand 13ft tall and has a tremendous amount of wind drag and I haul that thing up the steepest grades of Alaska in 4th gear at 55-60mph without a problem.

my 2002 v-10 recieved a straight pipe 6500 miles ago and no engine codes have come up, i didnt notice any loss of power. i love the sound, took a few days to get used to though. like a 747 taking off at 3000 rpms.

Most of the sound is killed in the CAT. I installed the Banks PowerPack and it's Muffler is a clean clear straight 3.5" shot with a few small holes in the pipe to let catch some high end sound but that's it. A Straight pipe sounds like a cheap way to get very close the Banks Muffler.

I've got the Banks also and I have yet to hear another exhaust system with as deep a tone.Needless I'm very happy with the way it sounds.
