I'm going to be the one who drops the smelly one here...
I own a 2001 F-250 with: Crew Cab; long bed; 4x4; V-10; auto trans; & limited slip 4.30 rearend. This list contains several "mileage eaters", yet things that I wanted on my truck regardless of price at the pump. I picked up the truck in the last week of Oct 2001 and so far it has 1,400 miles on it which are from runs to/from work (2 miles) as well as around town in the cold of Anchorage, Alaska. My mileage is nowhere near what I've seen posted here, even for the same drivetrain as mine.
Disclaimers: I haven't had it "on the road" for any big trip, so my mileage is definitely from short runs. Additionally, the Alaska thing makes it cold. It has been anywhere from a +35 to a -16 degrees F here in Anchorage so far this winter. Not the best temps for mileage, especially when you have to let it warm up for 10-15 minutes (sometimes longer) prior to driving and the fuel is reported to be oxygenated.
Now to the Mileage: So far, my mileage has been anywhere from 10.2 mpg after a fillup on 3 Nov to 6.9 mpg on 18 Dec. The total average for me has been 8.1 mpg. Not the economy model, however if I want better mileage I drive to work in my old green Jeep Cherokee and see 12 mpg in the winter. However, if I want to pull the world around by my tow hitch and do it in style, I hop into "Big Red".
I finally took the truck on the road and the mileage got alot better. We spent a winter day on a 233 mile trip here in Alaska with temps running around 30 degrees and the speeds around 55-60. Some hills and no load. I averaged 11.4 MPG.
In response to yours; I just picked up my '02 F250 4x4 crew cab lariat two days ago. I have 200 miles on it and am getting about 10.4. I began reviewing this web site looking for "tricks" to get it to 12mpg!! Do you think there is any hope?
Sure! Depends on your rear end gears somewhat, though. Just keep driving it, it'll get better. Plus don't reply on your trip computer as the "say all".
F-250 2002 4x4 CrewCab 3:73 Auto 6.8 2,500 miles = 10mpg.
Mostly City...Mostly Empty...I love it!
MPG??? That's why God made Honda Civics and Geos.
I don't read the bios on the Playboy centerfolds either...who cares?
Enjoy the ride and take care!
My '99 4X4 reg cab F250 3.73 grs has 19k miles. I've never been on a long trip with it so I don't know what my highway mileage would be. I average 12-13 miles per gallon on short trips. I've dipped to around 9 mpg pulling a gooseneck cattle trailer. Altough I only drive the truck approx 6k per year, I love it. I did not buy it for gas mileage. That is what my Volkswagen Jetta TDI is for. (50mpg)
This is an old topic but I thought I'd add a new "update" to it.
Unfortunantly, my 91 year old grandmother passed away a few days ago necessitating the need for me to drive from MA to PA. ('bout 340 miles) I stayed pretty much within the posted limit. I had fresh Mobil 1 and 60 psi in all the tires. It was just me & #2 kid, so the load was light. At the end of my trip, I averaged 17.5 mpg on the highway. Man, I love this truck!!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 02-Feb-02 AT 01:36 AM (EST)]Sorry to hear about your loss. I have an aunt who is about to pass- that's why I've not been posting a lot... been spending a lot of time at the hospital.
It's amazing that these big ol' beasts can do so well on mileage and still have so much power. Kudos to Ford.
I have a 99 F-350 PSD CC 8'bed 4x4 that gets 15-16 empty, and 13-13.5 with a combined weight of 18,000 lbs. Paid $31,000 one year old, with 17,000 miles on her. Black and beautifull. Now, here is the reak kick in the butt-a-kiss...
I also picked up brand new this past summer, a 2001 Nissan Crew Cab 4' bed 3.3 liter supercharged v-6 $27500. 12-14 MPG! My little Nissan requires super unleaded, due to the factory super charger, so the fuel costs more per gallon. We end up driving the F-350 more, since it costs less to operate.
My brother in law has a 1999 F-250 SD with a V-10, and he drives around his small town mostly, he sees 11-13 MPG but only has 9,000 miles on it. It may loosen up a bit later.
The bottom line is, these V-10's are pretty resectable for use as a daily driver, non trailer toting pick up, and the PSD is respectible as a trailer puller. But the mini trucks cant pull a trailer, can't ride 6 people in comfort, and are no where near as safe to be in.

I agree with the first part but could take exception to the latter part of your statement. These trucks are more than adequate and respectable when used for towing.
I just bought a 2001 Crew Cab V10 auto with 8K miles. On the hwy (75)I get 15 in town 12 with a 26' 5th wheel 7 to 8 on the hwy, yes if I run it like my vette I can get it in the 9's.
My 2000 Power stroke with the 6 speed got 19 on the hwy (i put 150K miles in under 2 years.) 15 in town and 9 with the trailer. If the guy who paid $5000 more for his PS thinks he did not throw his money away he will figure it out at the first $150 to $200 service.
I will stick with the V10.
