they say the 5.4 has to work harder thus you dont get much if any differance in milage between the 6.8 and 5.4. i've never driven a 5.4 excursion though so i cant personaly say.
OH! the other thing i forgot to mention. your wheels will kill milage. my heavy 20s on my 4x4 brought my milage down 1.5-2mpg city and highway. when running on stockers it would jump back up to normal. somthing else to think about.
More than likely it is: FUEL BLEND
You can hardly by gas worth a dime anymore, I don't know what they use and call it gas. Where I live the gas hardly even smells like gas.
As AlaskanEx put it, lose the rims, get some stock mags, and your mileage should improve. That's actually one reason I never went with 20s or even 22s....that and tires are ridiculously expensive.
i didnt think my coopers were too bad. 275/55 20 were $816 out the door mounted/balanced.
but you pay for the good looks with MPG as much as it sucks. i'd love to go with 20s on my new one(whatever it is) but i dont wanna loose mpg like i did before.
A friend of mine and I had identical trucks except I had the 5.4 and he had the 6.8. He got consisently better mileage than I did, especially on the interstate. Running 68 mph my v8 got 14.5-15 and his V10 got 15.5-16.5. Both trucks were 03 F250 CC 4x4 LBs.
As mentioned earlier the tires probably make a big difference. I was tire shopping and was amazed at the wieght of the 18 and larger tires. Some were as much as 95 lbs per tire. That takes alot of power to get them rollin..
I agree with AlaskanX, the 5.4 has to work harder to get/keep the big rig rollin'. My wife used to own a Dodge Durango with the 5.2l and she got lower miles per gallon as her cousin was getting with her Durango of the same year, same tires, but she had the 5.9l.
NO way! I have a 2004 X 5.4 4x4 with 0 mods other than the yipipe restrictors removed and I normally get 16 mpg at 70mph with the air on.
17 mpg at the same speed air off.I can and have got high 18's drafting.
I get 13mpg towing a 3k lb trailer(open) with 4 quads.
Not to be rude, but I have some serious doubts about the mileage claims some of you guys are making. If you guys have mileage records or excel spreadsheets - I'd love to see them. If you are using the overhead computer or just giving your guesstimate, no thanks.
DRM - A quote for you: After comparing mileage claims by their sales force to their actual mileage logs a manager I know made the statement "when it comes to mileage people lie a lot."
I've seen guys make claims after only putting a 1/4 tank of fuel and doing a calculation. If you don't have logs and multiple tanks of fuel to compare then your numbers are at best a very rough estimate. Heck, you can get filling errors of up to two gallons even in small (18 gallon) fuel tanks. This factor alone can give you up to 5% variation in measurements on each tank.
Another factor that people don't add in is their odometer error. The very best speedometer I've ever had was 3% off. 10% error is probably closer to the average.
Tire pressure differences can also lead to a 5% variation.
I wouldn't find it at all unusual to see single tank variations between two units of up to 30% when the vehicles are actually getting the exact same mileage. Due to the above factors. And then you add the issue of different drivers, terrains, wind speed, speeds, ....
As I have said in other threads, this is my 3rd Ford V10 vehicle, and I've kept hand calc'd records for every one of them as long as I owned them, corrected for odometer variations, too. I currently have a 98 Cummins truck that I have logged every mile and tank of fuel I have put in it since... 2003.
You can guess - this is an issue I take pretty serious
I used to own a 2000 Ex Limited 2wd V10.
A trip to Disney World from Miami (roughly 225 miles) was giving me 14.5 MPG
With my recent 2000 Excursion v8 5.4L, I just returned from Disney World and got 12.4 MPG as my best MPG. WTF!!!!
Just got back from our little jaunt up to NH from Cape Cod. We drove almost 400 miles up and back. We filled up when we got back on the Cape. The Ex is a 2000 4x4 Ltd. with the 6.8 gasser with 90,000 miles on the clock and 3.73 gears.
The "lie o' meter said 14.1 mpg. and the hand calculater said 13.6 mpg. We did every kind of driving that there was to do: fast, slow, up and down hills with and without the O/D on, etc. We even drag raced a "hemi" Durango! He beat us, but we were not embarrassed!
So! There ya go!

I thought I was the only one with a 2004 5.4 4x4. I know they're hard to come by. I just drove down to South Carolina and I filled up at half tank. I just had Magnaflow duals and a reworked downpipe installed in June. At just below a half tank, I had 300 miles on the trip. I was impressed, that was with the A/C on. Avg speed of 70 mph.
