Recently installed a new open chamber style muffler with new tail pipe and tip.Talk about a difference in m.p.g.!Stock muffler is ultra restrictive. Now im considering air box mods, looks to me like the V-10 gets a rather meager portion of air in its diet.Anyone drilled their airbox yet? I have done this before on late model trucks with good results, since the airbox is far forward, there may be a way to ensure large quanities of cool air.Shall we brainstorm?.
For the F series pick-ups, there are many different airboxes made by quite a few different manufacturers. I'm looking at a MacPerformance air inlet system now from an F series that I am going to try and adapt to fit my E-350 V-10. Banks has a system but it's rather spendy. Holley has a system also. The V-10 in the van loses 10 horsepower JUST from the configuration of it's airbox versus the airbox from the F-series. So it can make quite a difference. What kind of muffler did you go to ? My exhaust system is 3" all the way back, is that the same on the F-series ? How about the sound, any change ? After the airbox mods a new muffler will be my next procurement. Ken
I dont recall the muffler brand name, its 17" long, oval shaped, open chamber style.3" pipe to the back.I was getting 8 to 9 mpg around town with stock setup, tracked my first tank at 10.75 per gallon, and i drove it hard, pulling my skid steer loader and trailer, about #8,000.The truck has more bass now when standing outside listening but no appreciable rise in interior noise.
Thanks for the pics and the links. I have considered hacking off the front part of the airbox BUT I really think that some sort of RamAir system would help even more. I love the Banks system, but you have to buy the whole deal, chip, exhaust, headers to get the airbox conversion, although I am trying to talk Banks into just selling me the RamAir system by itself. And MacPerformance is looking into converting an F-Series system to fit my E-Series. I don't want to lose the ram-air effect by cutting the front part of the box off. I'll let y'all know what I turn up, Ken
I'm going to be posting pics of this mod. I drilled the ZOODAD mod holes in the front and hacked off the front of the air cleaner. Looks almost factory, I put some door edge guard around the cut edge and cleaned it up really nice.
Will do, I'm looking forward to 'hot-rodding' her up a little bit. I'm also going full boat on the interior ala 3 6" TV's, a DVD player, a VCR, a Playstation and Nintendo. 1 TV I'm going to mount on the passenger side visor, and then 2 more along the drivers side spaced out on the C and D pillars. It should be quite a system. Out previous van was a MArk III conversion with a raised roof which housed the TV/VCR. But this van doesn't have the raised roof, so I'll need to get creative. We drive ALOT so it's nice to have something for the kids to do while going down the road.
The Banks system uses the same front half of the stock air filter housing. They provide a new back half of the housing along with a new oiled cotton guaze, KnN type filter.
Try this link for aftermarket V-10 air-box,similiar to FIPK.I was quoted $275.00 includes filter.www.streetandperformanceelectronics.com I was quoted $275.00 for the airmax alone, includes filter.$512.00 for the chip, airmax, and helix tower.Part # for V-10 airmax in F series application is #26800.Any opinions?
Farni, thanks for the advice. My problem is my V-10 is in an E-350 van. There's much less room under the hood. The Banks system, Holley's system and the MacPerformance system will all work on F-series, but not on an E-series. Ken
I don't like it. Uses a "reducer" (aka rubber hose) to connect the filter/MAF assembly to the OEM tube from the TB. At least the K&N and Airaid kits give you a complete intake sysem. Plus, the filter appears to be capped on the end that butts up against the OEM air inlet. This would block off any "cold" air from the front of the truck. The one good thing is that it comes with a heat shield.
Never have been impressed with the Helix thing. Swirling air in an EFI manifold hurts more than it helps. Any gains would come from the effective lengthening of the intake runners as a result of the "spacer"- not the swirling. Pretty sad when one of the benefits is "Has that cool Helix sound". BTW, that "sound" is an annoying high-pitched whistle!
The chip (Ford module as they call it) appears to be a Superchip.
"Never have been impressed with the Helix thing. Swirling air in an EFI manifold hurts more than it helps"
These 'gadgets' have always amused me. Ford will spend MILLIONS trying to raise the CAFE avg and NOT figure out something like the Helix ? Yea right,,, Everybody has, in the history of internal combustion engines, always come up with some kind of 'snake-oil' for the masses to consume. This Helix deal is junk, just like the rest of the junk we've been subjected to over the years. Like the in-line magnets that clamp around your fuel line that supposedly 're-aligns' the fuel molecules for more power and more MPG. For being the smartest, most educated, wealthiest, most affluent country on earth, we sure get sucked into alot of stupid gadgets. Ken.
