NASA started out as NACA their work on airfoils (wings) for high speed flight and eventualy space travel was how the came across the NACA duct. It was the answer to getting cooling air into areas of a plane without drag or as little as possible. The reason you were wondering what NACA was is because before space flight they changed their name to NASA
OK I looked at the inlet tube on the air box and it is strate and large almost as large as the throttle body, so to me there is no way cutting you airbox will improve performance. As stated above the MFG's have worked long and hard to reduce intake temp by moving the intake out of the underhood area cutting the box can not help.
On my vette every mod that works is a cold air induction unit same goes for old HIpo cars remember the shaker hood, cowlesp?) induction, ram air. Heat kills power and cutting you box has to increase heat.

I just Cut a nice hole to give it more air.
Works for me.
Gary E K thanks for the picture. Do you have any problem with moisture or water making its way in the air box?
I kind of did my own modification on the other side of the radiator brace cutting two 1 1/2" holes. I put them as low as posible to prevent direct water into the air box. I did trim the rubber skirt back a bit to let more air pass. I'll have to keep an eye on it when the wet weather comes around. It seems to be working, letting more air in?!?
Gary- after looking at my '02 SD...your plan sure did look to be the best solution to getting more cool air to the filter. Cant imagine opening up the filter box to allow the HOT engine air sucked into the throttle body. But am stumped about best way to cut that hole in the radiator flange without taking off the grille. Any help?
Appreciate it-- thnx.....
Does anyone here know the reason for the two nickel-sized holes in the stock air filter housing? I can see the paper element through the holes. One thought that I had was that they would be drainage holes for water that has somehow entered the airway, but they are too high up for that (they are at 8 or 9 o'clock when looking from the front of the vehicle -- that would be on an analog clock).
Thanks
Interesting find - not sure mine has these. I wonder if the holes
are to give the truck a more agressive sound. They would reduce
intake resistance a bit, but also let in some power robbing warm air
when at temp. They could even be to tune the intake at certain engine rpms.
You could try taping them over and see if it drives/sounds any different.
